Patricia from Accrington reviewed the Pelin Hotel
Check-in Date: 23/Oct/2009

We were in Turkey for 4 weeks in October 2009, moving around from place to place to get a real feel for the Turquoise Coast, our first stay was at the Pelin Hotel, and, because we liked the area and the hotel and the staff and the facilities so much, we returned for the latter part of our holiday. We cannot praise the staff enough for their attentive service, helpfulness, information and friendliness. We grew particularly fond of both Asu and Emel on reception, who were always happy to help and always with a smile 24x7. The rooms were kept spotless, towels changed whenever you wanted. and linen changed more regularly than we expected. We were on bed and breakfast for the first week, and the buffet breakfast was excellent, lots of choice, fresh, well cooked and presented. We paid for the evening buffet one night (a reasonable £10 pp) and again, lots of choice, well cooked, and much attention to detail in the presentation and setting out of the buffet area. The dining room waiters were excellent, always pleasant, courteous, friendly and quick to remove plates etc. The chef is so cute! and always out checking and replacing where necessary and tidying up and re-setting. On our return visit we booked half board, and it worked out at £4 pp, what great value it was. The cleaners were unobtrusive, smiling, and they welcomed us back on our second stay with open arms. They made some amazing swans with the towels, and arranged the beds and towels differently every day - such attention to detail. The accountant (manager?) was a lovely man, and all the staff seemed very proud of their hotel and made sure all areas were constantly clean and tidy and welcoming. The pool/pool bar/snacks was superb, and because it was end of season when we were there, we had the pool to ourselves, though we did go the the beach a few times too. The only downside was the hanging space (or lack of it!) and only 1 drawer (small) in the one bedside cabinet. There was plenty of shelf space in the wardbobe and we improvised very well by hanging a few garmets on each hanger and putting the hanger over the top of the inside of the wardrobe door - sorted! The rooms were very spacious and on both visits we had a great and unobstructed view of the pool and bar area. The childrens playground was lovely, and it was a pleasant suprise to see rabbits, hens, ducks and chickens wandering about freely in the play area - such a nice touch for the children. It is a hotel we would bring our young grand daughter to and she would be delighted with the play area and the animals. The pool, whilst being very big, did not have a shallow end, or graduated steps, and was 5 feet deep at the shallow end - being only 5 foot myself, I couldnt stand up! No problem though, it was warm enough and there are step ladders at each end of the pool, and there was also lilo's and buoyancy aids provided. There is an adequate separate children's pool, great for them to splash about in. I had taken a lap top so I could keep in touch with family and book other accommodation, as I had read there was wi-fi at the hotel, it worked, and was great, it might cost you 7tl unlimited use, somehow we didnt pay - result! We will definitely be going back - at the price you pay via Travel Republic, and the facilities, service and staff at the hotel, we wouldnt stay anywhere else in Calis.

Top Tip Calis is totally flat and great for walking around, and a walk to the market is a must. If you can manage it, you can walk in to Fetiye, which is worth the walk, and you can get a water taxi or dolmus back. The kerbs are very high on the main road, and could be difficult for the less mobile, although there is a pedestrian crossing near to the hotel. If you are looking for property there is no shortage of estate agents, who are not at all pushy. There is wi-fi in most bars-restaturants, you only have to buy a drink and its free. The beach was good, has plenty of sunbeds/parasols (5tl a day) and slopes gently in to the sea, which was warm, just try to avoid the cigarette ends! The wind tended to get up early afternoon which was a godsend when it was 35d+ (yes, it really was that hot in early October). We tried a lot of restaurants and it is difficult to recommend any outstanding ones as they are all very similar in menu and price. We liked the Italian restaurant attached to the Delta Hotel on the prom, and especially the lunchtime offer for 2 people of a very large pizza (any from the menu) and 2 beers/soft drinks for 7tl each (£3). We found Anna's to be the cheapest for drinks and the food was good too (walk up the promenade to where the water taxi's are, and its about 4 restaurants along on the promenade or opposite the water taxi's. Try the Merhaba (Hello!) restaurant on the prom if you want an English owned establishment, the owner is a really nice guy, and if you want information on living in Calis/Turkey, have a chat with him. We hired a car from Ege (on the main shopping street up from the taxi rank) they were very helpful, and you can also pick up the free local expat newspaper 'Land of Lights' there too - definitely worth a read, or, you can get it on line and register via email so you never miss a copy. English is spoken everywhere, though we would recommend you get a phrase book (cheaper on amazon.com than anywhere else) and at least learn the basics, it is very welcomed and well received, especially in rural areas/small villages. We would recommend a trip to Kalkan and Kas - totally different from Calis (we stayed in Kalkan as part of our trip) and do take one of the full day boat trips (we booked ours through Hamis McTurk (yes, that was his name), it is a lovely day out. The Turkish people as a whole are exceedingly frendly, helpful, kind, sincere, and courteous. As the English are generally reserved, do not take them as 'wanting something' - they dont want anything - they really are genuine, so embrace Turkey, the people, the customs and everything it has to offer with open arms and enjoy your time there. The only unwelcomed experience we had was with a very insistent jeweller who was very rude because we did not buy anything (in Icmeler). As well as booking the hotel through Travel Republic, we booked transfers from-to the airport, we were met-picked up at the times stated, and were very pleased with the transport provided, the cost was also very competitive.

I cant really think of anything awful to say about the hotel. We paid a very good price for our holiday with Travel Republic so we cant complain. Even so, the hotel was clean and modern (we were in the newer part). The swimming pool was also clean and it had a nice pool bar. The people on reception were efficient and helpful. The only bad thing was that you had to cross a busy dual carriageway to get to the beach, bars and restaurants, but we did know about that before we came by reading the reviews. To be fair, the road was at its busiest in the evenings and there was a crossing. The beach is lovely and there were lots of restaurants along the beach to choose from. We had excellent weather in October.

Top Tip Get down to breakfast by 09.30 at the latest to ensure you get a good selection of food. Plus breakfast finishes at 10.00 sharp. The water taxi to Fethiye was a lovely way to get there and was very reasonable. The restaurant we liked I think was call the Orient or Oriental, although it was not chinese. We got the local dolmus bus from Fethiye to the Blue Lagoon beach and the beach was lovely with nice shops and restaurants to look around.

staff were very friendly and efficient.
Hotel was clean and food was great.
bed was far too firm and uncomfortable.
some drinks were a little on the pricey side.
There was alot of noise from a music venue accross the road. Though not everyday, it was disturbing.

We have been holidaying in Turkey for the past 7 years, so it would be fair to say that we have a broad experience of various hotels and other places to stay. We chose the Pelin because of it's accessibility to the airport, the resort and it's amenities and because in October, it was out of season for most families with children. It was also on at a very cheap rate. Expectations were therefore not very high, but we are happy to report that overall, it was excellent value for money. Staff were chatty and courteous, the room staff giving me a Turkish phrase each day. The hotel was kept very clean including the rooms. Twice we arrived back to be greeted with animals made from towels and scattered with flowers - a very nice touch. Pool and bar was good and staff there too were attentive. For the money it was a good choice.

Top Tip Go to http://www.calis-beach.co.uk/ for recommendations for local restaurants etc. We did and we eat at some excellent places - some we would not of dreamt of going to!

The hotel was very clean and airy. The rooms are visited everyday by the cleaning staff who supplied us with extra pillows and they will happily change your towels daily.
The rooms dont have a cold tile floor but are carpeted and the air conditioning is free.
The only comment that i do feel needs mentioning is that the swimming pool doesn't have a shallow end it is the same depth all round.

Top Tip The beach and restaurants are only a 10 minute slow walk and you don't get hassled by every restaurant rep to eat in theirs. The Calis Beach restaurant and Rushes restaurant were absolutely fantastic to eat at especially as we had a six year old with us. There are also some great trips available especially the one to Dalyan to see the turtles.

We thought the hotel and its staff were excellent and the food varied and plentiful. We are glad we went half board, the value for the whole package was outstanding.

All your paperwork and arrangements went with no hitches. This was our first time with Travel Republic and we woluld certainly use you in the future

Cassie from High Wycombe reviewed the Pelin Hotel
Check-in Date: 27/Sep/2009

The room was basic but had a good shower and was cleaned well by the maids. The hotel in general was extremely clean and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The pool area was great with plenty of sun loungers and the bar drinks and food all good and very well priced. We only had bed and breakfast and the buffet style food in the mornings was plenty to fill you up and you could eat as much as you liked.

The hotel does not have sea views so when booking don't ask for this! I would recommend getting air con even if it is extra as we went out of season - end of Sept/early Oct and used it every day. I could not imagine what it would be like without in high season.

The beach is a short walk away (just a couple of minutes) however as mentioned in some of the other reviews you have to cross a main road to get to it. If you have children or are elderly this may not be ideal as you have to climb over a central reservation. This was not difficult for us and was not an issue as the road generally did not seem that busy but may be a consideration for some.

Also note that the beach is not really waht I would consider a sand beach - more shingle. However this did not really bother me as much as i thought it would. The view is lovely and the beach has a cooler breeze than being at the pool which is much needed at the hottest parts of the day. Saying that the other beaches we visisted in surrounding areas were also not sandy so I wouldn't rule out Calis based on this.

Top Tip Calis has a great promenade with a long line of restaurants and bars. I found the food to be of a very high standard everywhere we ate and the staff and locals extremely friendly and welcoming. If you walk to the very far end you will find the SAT club which is a beautiful restaurant and bar. Its worth a journey to go up there and sunbathe as they have plenty of loungers, chill out music, outdoor chaise longues, beach cushions etc. Great staff and the perfect place to catch the sunset!

The river boat taxis to fethiye is also a must. A great trip in the evening for shopping and dinner and very cheap 4TL. The bus is even better value at 1.5TL.

Calis is a great little place and I would recommend for anyone wanting a relaxing week or two in the sun!

Main road and entrance to Hotel are very badly lit. Bring a torch! Reception area and lounges are very nice. Reception staff -very pleasant and helpful. Pool/bar area are well kept and there is a small kiddies pool also. Chickens and rabbits roam freely in an area of the well kept grounds and this has an added attraction for children. Rooms are spotless, fair sized but seriously lacking in storage space. There are no drawers apart from a tiny shallow one on the bedside cabinet. Hanging space is abysmal and I hung my dresses on the towel hooks in the bathroom. There is a safety deposit box in the "wardrobe".
Dining room is large with an substantial outdoor area. There is also a roof terrace which was closed when we went in September. Breakfast is very repetitive but lots of (continental) choices. Dinner was buffet style and varied. You are given a "credit card" and pay for drinks etc at end of holiday. All said, good value hotel.

Top Tip Cross main road immediately outside hotel, walk thro some new building work and you are at beach. Beach beds have no cushioning, but various restaurants have free padded cushions for your use, providing you use their facilities, even to buy a drink. Use the dolmus. Flag them down anywhere. Great value getting around to see other places. Water taxi to Fethiye is close by and worth the 4Lira.

Breakfast was very poor.
Pool & pool bar was good, except only had 1ltr bottles of diet coke.

Top Tip 5 minute walk to beach - across a busy dual carriageway. Need to remember that traffic comes from the other direction (drive on the right hand side of the road).
Travel Republic need to find a way to ensure that people don't have to phone up to re-confirm transfers, as this was very difficult to get people the other end to understand, and the system should enable those in charge of the transfer to know who they have dropped off where, and when they need to be collected again. This probably cost a fortune on my mobile and caused a lot of stress.

A from Clapham reviewed the Pelin Hotel
Check-in Date: 21/Sep/2009

We were pleasantly surprised by our stay in the Pelin Hotel. The range of food in the evenings was excellent and the puddings were fabulous. Breakfast could have been a bit more varied but we were happy with this. Having 2 children 3yrs and 15mths we were spoilt rotten by the friendly staff. From the ladies at reception, to the restaurant staff and the cleaners...they couldn't get enough of us and made our stay that much more memorable for us and for our children.. nothing was too much trouble for them to solve. We were never asked to pay anything extra for milk or boiled water for our baby which was taken every day in the morning and again in the evenings. The childrens area behind the pool unfortunately doubles for a chicken and rabbit enclosure so is not that hygenic which was the only downside and therfore was not used by us. The Pool is lovely and clean and was frequented by us regularly after a full morning on the beach.

Top Tip As others have commented the road outside the hotel has huge curbs so turn right and cross at the lights 100m down the road (as we had a buggy and needed easier access). The traffic was normally light so there were lots of gaps. Calis Beach reataurant was great. The beach is very close by and is very children friendly being calm before noon. The apple pie sellers are a must also straight to your sunbed. The mini bus at the stops marked D were easy to hop on & hop off and at TKL 1.5 each way were very cheap and very frequent. The Tuesday (Local) & Sunday (Town) markets are a must... just take your wits with you and tag team (your partner barters.. then you come along with the wallet and start again to get the best bargain). What ever you do during Summer take extra sunscreen and always carry water with you. For the flights over check first if there is to be a complimentary meal as there was on the way over but on the way back there was not (different carrier)

Excellent value for money and strongly recommend staying in the annex rooms in preference to the actual hotel from what we have heard.
The pool was the best we have seen but the cost of hotel drinks is twice as expensive as the hotel bars on the front near the beach. You expect to pay a little more but not double - hence it was cheaper to walk 5 minutes to a bar on the front. Reduce the prices, and turnover will increase.
The reception staff were all friendly and happy to please.

Top Tip Walk to the front then turn right and walk to the end of the promenade - here you will find FREE sunbeds if you drink at there reasonably priced bar.
