  • Wendy from Pembroke reviewed the Castello Village Hotel

  • "Very friendly and helpful.

Building site opposite (part of the same ownership as hotel we believe) did wake us in the morning but they did try to do something about it. Hopefully not relevant next year.

In the early hours what we assume to be the rubbish collection was very noisy for a while every morning."

  • Top Tip:

    "Very pretty harbour."

  • john from devizes reviewed the Castello Village Hotel

  • "Hotel cost about £170 for two people for half board in late October. This was excellent value for money. Did the hotel match up to its 4 star rating? No, definitely not, compared to other hotels we have stayed in. Hotel site was compact, there was no car park. Advertised as bungalow style was misleading - most of the rooms were in two or three storey blocks - we heard several people asking to change room for various reasons. Our room was below the swimming pool pumps which were noisy at night. On positive side an effort was made to put entertainment on each night and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful where they could be. Good variety of food, some traditional, however very little was piping hot which was not helped by cold plates."

  • "We were told on arrival we could only stay in room one night and we would have to vacate it at breakfast time we were not allocated another room until about 13:00 next day, I fail to see since our holiday was booked well in advance that there was not a room allocated on arrival.
The manager however was very helpful but i feel we had a wasted first day."

  • margaret from Oldham reviewed the Castello Village Hotel

  • "Although we had booked a sea/mountain view, we did not get one, and were told that it would be another 300euros for a sea view, which when refused was reduced to 150euros. Also we were given a double bedded room, and had to use a put-u-up, as being 2 single women we didn't wish to share a double bed. Possibly not suitable for older/infirm people, as there are a lot of steps.
However, the hotel facilities were very good, including food and entertainment. Very clean, and staff very friendly and accomodating"

  • Martin from Windsor reviewed the Castello Village Hotel

  • "First rate hotel at a very good price - excellent food, friendly and helpful staff, immaculately clean, good location. Whilst it's next to the sea, there's no beach - rocks only. Plenty of nearby alternative beaches as long as you have a car (cheap via travelrepublic). Lots of alternative places to eat should you so wish. Would recommend, and plan to return. Excellent all round service from travelrepublic."

  • Top Tip:

"Milatos harbour beach, Malia beach near the ruins, and the trip into the mountains to the Lassithi Plateau.

Not Hotel related, but would advise to avoid flying with flythomascook - zero legroom, packed in like a sardine, a deeply unpleasant flying experience. Never again."

  • COLIN from OXFORD reviewed the Castello Village Hotel

  • "The hotel/apartment was excellent. The staff were all very friendly, polite and a pleasure to be around - their knowledge of languages was astounding. The food was excellent - we changed from bed and breakfast to full board at a minimum cost and it was well worth it.

There was a very good programme of daytime entertainment (aqua gym, volleyball, water polo, pool side games etc) - something to suit all ages and good evening entertainment.

Would certainly recommend to family/friends and will consider a return holiday in the next year or so."

  • "The rooms were very well laid out. We had a downstairs and upstairs balcony and both were child friendly for my 4 year old daughter. The pools were very clean and the staff very attentive to our needs. The hotel evening entertainment was exceptional.
The kids club was set up very well. The kids club room was cool and safe with lots of drawing and painting as well as activities around the site. The Kids club staff were excellent."

  • Top Tip:

"Bar Sissi which is situated 10minute walk into the town just past the harbour was very english and if thats what you like - its very good. Bouffos beach which is a 10 minute walk out of sissi awa from the harbour is great even though it is a bit stoney it has a fantastic bar and lunch time food as well as the beach it has a pool and a trampoline - definately worth a visit."

  • Adam from Ipswich reviewed the Castello Village Hotel

  • "The rooms were quite basic as with most Greek hotels/apartments however I felt that there was more room, more storage space and a better layout than others I have stayed in. It was cleaned daily to a good standard.

Kitchen facilities were limited with respect to minimal cutlery (enough for two people only), one pot in which to boil water (as there was no kettle) and one frying pan - with only a dual hot plate hob, one plate far too small to provide sufficient heat to both the pot and pan at the same time. However other than hot drinks there was little need for these as meals and snacks were available from the hotel and several restaurant less than 5 minute walk away.

The breakfast buffet was of a high standard and heated cuisine was rotated on a daily basis between three or four slightly different foods. There was much to choose from covering every type of breakfast that comes to mind (pancakes, croissants, cereal, English breakfast, fruit, cheese and ham, toast, etc).

The hotel is fitted with two, obviously well maintained, swimming pools – one of reasonable size (which overlooks the sea) and the other much larger. Both are fitted with pool bars and safety equipment in accordance with the relevant, and publicly displayed, ISO standards.
As a whole the hotel is very picturesque and very clean. All of the staff are very friendly and very helpful. There is information about the hotel and the island including trips and bus services which is kept in the hotel reception, this is supplied in several different languages. The hotel has a Greek night on a Thursday with a bbq buffet which was lovely and at least 3 courses worth of food per person and there are traditional Greek dancers in the traditional dress for 16 Euros each. It was defiantly worth it."

  • Top Tip:

"All of the main restaurants are in very close proximity to the hotel, situated around the small local harbour. However, in general everything is more expensive in Crete as a whole than previous Greek islands we have visited (Zante, Corfu, etc). All of the restaurants had very friendly service and had very nice food, however look out for the never ending raki.

There is no beach directly outside of the hotel as rocks and rubble dominate the large majority of the coast line around Sissi, however you will find small beach openings on the other side of the harbour from the hotel (near the Palm Bay hotel) and in the opposite direction just around the corner there are some lovely coves, and a much larger sandy beach which you can only access by going over the rocks as it is blocked off for use by another hotel"

  • "The hotel was good, the staff very attentive and the accommodation comfortable. The only complaint that I have was that the dinner at the hotel was not great. They had a great selection of breakfast but dinner was not very tasty. We ate out most nights."

  • Top Tip:

"On exiting the Castello Village resort, about a mile down the road to the left (a nice walk), there was a fab beach where the waters were very shallow and clear and the beaches sandy (on the shore outside Kalimera Kriti hotel). The place is very quiet and tranquil and great for anyone with small kids."

  • Jennifer from Spalding reviewed the Castello Village Hotel

  • "On arriving they had doulble booked our room and we were placed just down the road in a sub standard room (they left this late in the day and we were tired so accepted it). The shower was broken and my 6 year old son was bitten alive in the night. They finally put us in an upgraded room the next day. We will not be going to costello village again as it turns out double booking is normal for this hotel. On the up side the hotel when we finally got our room on day 2 was clean, pool areas also clean staff very friendly and helpful."

  • Anna from Winchester reviewed the Castello Village Hotel

  • "Sissi is a great holiday resort, being very beautiful and quiet. Castello Village was provided good accomodation, we had a one bedroom apartment which was clean and provided all the basics (just don't plan on cooking any gourmet meals). However the balcony was a bit of hazard - it wasn't safe to stand on! The reception staff were very friendly and were able to assist with all enquiries. The buffet breakfast was always well stocked and provided the standard selection of continental and hot food. The swimming pool was the highlight of the hotel - it was beautifully clean, had wonderful sea views, was never too crowded and was always a peaceful place to spend a day."

  • Top Tip:

"If you have a weakness for fabulous jewellery then don't forget to take some extra cash for the many boutiques in Sissi which produce hand made white gold pices that are far cheaper than that which will you will find in England. The beach is worth a visit but be warned the sea bed is covered in large rocks which make it hard to stand up - jelly shoes reccommended! Knossos is a must see when visiting Crete, this is a fabulous site with a very interesting history. We decided not to go on the organised trip and instead hired a car for the day (which was fairly cheap and easy to arrange). The drive is fairly straight forward - although it must be noted that in Crete the hard shoulder is considered a lane if someone behind you is coming up fast! There is free parking but we came to what we thought was the official car park and ended up having to pay. It is a very shady site and therefore you wont get too hot, with plenty of places to sit down. Going on our own meant we had the freedom of not being in a large group but this also meant we didnt have the benefit of a guided tour, which is useful if you have little knowledge of the site as it is not all that well sign posted.
Sissi is a great place to stay if you're looking for a peaceful, relaxing and beautiful place to stay."

  • "While classed 4 star we found it was more like 3 star.We upgraded to a suite which was a lot better and 320 euro more expensive though well worth the extra..On the plus side the staff were very freindly and nothing was a bother for them from the manager to the housemaids .On the negative side the food was not what it could be.The soup was always cold and the courses were a little bland at times. We ate out a few times. On the whole we had a very good holiday Sissi as a resort was just perfect for us and after upgrading to the suite the hotel was fine.We would definately go back."
