"Chose Eden Mar Suite Hotel on basis of reviews at TripAdvisor balanced with our needs for a relaxing off-peak week away. Booked via Travel Republic after TripAdvisor screen scrape for deals and saved ££'s.
Had ground floor room, with everso partial sea view, but overlooking gardens and pool area. Hotel was quiet & relaxing off season, but busy enough with a number of other travellers typically mid-thirty somethings upto Saga crowd.
Shares communal pool/cafe/restaurants with Porto Mare Hotela and The Residence and overall it's an impressive complex, well laid out, pleasant gardens and numerous attractive pools outside and inside. Plenty of sunbeds, and a few hammocks for lazing about.
Staff were pleasant and helpful. Tried breakfast day following arrival and was good, if usual breakfast fare (aprx 9Euros per person per day) - though we had decided to self cater for breakfast making full use of our simple kitchenette (hob, fridge, sink, crockery & cutlery). Didn't eat evening meals at Hotel complex, though did have two cafe lunches which were simple and fairly reasonable.
Weather was surprisingly good, warm enough to lizard about on most days by the pool - and prevailing winds kept temparture aprx 20C around Funchal (though as you'll read, Madeira has a variety of complex micro-climates and you can end up with 4 seasons in one day).

"Funchal town center is an easy walk aprx 20-25 mins at a leisurely pace. Some great places to eat about and given low season no need to book. We tried: Sol da Aduja (? - steak on stone) - very close, reasonable and excellent food; Tricolore Italian (also nearby in Lido Hotel complex), Paradise (towards town, traditional Madeiran cuisine), Arsenios (good grill, but Fado music a bit much...) etc.
Self catering - local mini markets are OK for picking up bits and bobs, but fresh fruit, vegetables and most groceries can be picked up daily from the amazing and colourful Funchal market - a feast for the eyes and easy on the wallet."Eden Mar Suite Hotel check-in Date:

"VERY PLEASED WITH THE HOTEL. LARGE COMFORTABLE ROOM. EXCELLENT SERVICE. GOOD FACILITIES BOTH WITHIN THE HOTEL AND NEARBY.IT REPRESENTED GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY. ONLY GROUSE WAS HAVING TO PAY EXTRA FOR THE ROOM SAFE. WOULD BE HAPPY TO RETURN."

"High percentage of older people which meant no louts, trouble or noise.
No beaches on Madeira but pool complex excellent with local lido.
Food was fine - no complaints - albeit not excellent.
Many restaurants nearby and also a couple of supermarket.
Gardens were fantastic, absolutely lovely."Top Tip:
"Walk in to Funchal only 20 minutes and downhill.
The local "yellow" buses were great - no real need for taxis although they were not expensive.
No need to pack much in the way of warm or wet weather clothing.
The fish restaurants were a delight.

"we were upgraded free of charge to a very nice time share apartment as the Hotel Eden mar was fully booked on arrival. This worked well in our favour but I wonder if it works the other way round as well ie if booked into the more expensive Porto Mare part of the complex and then downgraded to Eden mar ?

"On arrival we were informed of an upgrade in the sister hotel The Residence, WOW!! Two bedrooms, two balconies, etc., etc.! What an upgrade, but all three hotels were excellent, we had originally booked at the Eden Mar Suite. Everything from Lina in Eden Mar reception, allocating our room to the end of our stay was spot on! Local restaurants were brilliant particularly Casa Italia around the corner, we even had a takeaway from there one evening and sat on the balcony with a bottle of vino. Then down for a little music in one of the hotel bars and the odd dance. Some nights the entertainment was better than others but overall excellent. Travel Republic sorted everything, taxis from and to the airport, on time, a lovely week."

"one word - excellent! The only complaints I had- was that we had to walk over to the other hotel to change the pool towels and there was no toaster in the kitchen!!!"

"There are so many restaurants in Funchal it is difficult to pick one but one of many is the Paradise just along the road down a slope and the Italian outside the hotel to the right is good too. "Eden Mar is a mature hotel that offers an excellent half board tarrif experience. Sedate entertainment - remarkable weather - very quiet relaxed holiday.."

"Number 48 bus to Monte. Directly outside the hotel once an hour. quite an experience and an alternative to the cable car. 20 times cheaper as well after you have done the cable car return for 20 euro's.
Walk the promanade from the lido.very relaxing.

"We booked a junior suite at the Eden Mar. The rooms were spacious and well equipped. We had a large balcony with sea views. Because you can use all the facilities at the adjoining Porto Mar Hotel you have a good range of restaurants,bars and "Happy Hours"! The hotel gardens are beautiful. Even though the hotel was full we managed to get a sun bed every day without resorting to putting towels out as a number of people did.The hotels are very relaxing and the staff are very good. In particular the main receptionist,Lina Franc who was the best we have encountered in any hotel -nothing was too much trouble."
Top Tip:
"Good,inexpensive (but busy) italian at the side of the Eden Mar.
Catamaran was a good trip.
Toboggan was fun but was spoiled by drivers demanding tips at the end.
No beach but if you want a change from the v good hotel pools The lido was good for a change.

"A great snack bar on the complex shopping centre the Barracuda, did great value for money meals and drinks. About 500 yards from the Hotel towards town was a fantastic Restaurant the 'Paradise' that served great value food with a magnificent view over the Ocean. "Beautiful group of hotels in lovely surroundings, everything you could want. Staff are excellent, so friendly and helpful. Restaraunts lovely and reasonably priced. Happy hour at pool bar worth a visit and buffet breakfast is excellent. If you are not half board you can pre purchase blocks of meals, good saving. Towels provided for pool, ladies take a hair dryer, the ones in bathroom are not up to much. Evening entertainment is not earth shattering depends what you want but overall a lovely resort if you want a good break and some peace and quiet."
Top Tip:
"The cable car ride is a must, the scenery is fab. The Botanic Gardens are lovely and a taxi, return with 1 1/2hr wait is only 36 euros! Taxi's are quite cheap, only about 6 euros into Funchal. The open top bus is only 10 euros and about 1 hr 15mins round the town. Book the private transfer from airport, it is a taxi and is only about £40 return, hassle free!
