  • Robert from Birmingham reviewed the Gold Stone Hotel

  • "Hotel room very good value for money (less than £45 each for the week): spacious with three single beds (we had to push two together for a 'double bed'), a good shower/bathroom (the room water tended to be cold before 9am and in the evening hours so best to take showers between 9am and 6pm), and a balcony with a sea view. Bed linen and towels changed daily. Ideal for use as a base for people not averse to a little noise! The friends bar & restaurant (which is part of the hotel) plays fairly loud music for most of the day up until 2am so if you're looking for tranquility forget it! After a couple of days you sort of get used to it and sleeping becomes easier although it is advisable to try to get an hour or two's sleep during the day if possible. However, the Goldstone is surrounded by several other vibrant bar/hotels so avoid this whole area if you want peace and quiet. The rooms have optional air conditioning and fridges (at an extra cost of £60 and £30 pounds respectively) but we managed without either by leaving the balcony door open whilst we were in the room and regularly buying lots of cold bottled water from the local MegaMarket. We did however rent a safe box for the week at £15. The staff were all very friendly and most of them spoke excellent English. Some of them expressed disappointment that we did not spend more time in 'Friends' but at no time were any of them pushy or offhand with us, contrary to many reviews I have since read. We didn't bother with the free turkish breakfast as you could get a full ('lorry driver') english breakfast for less than 5 lira which was sizeable and authentic. We only had one other meal in the restaurant, cheeseburger and chips, which at 6.9 lira (less than £3.50) was excellent in value and taste. The restaurant's menu has a fairly wide choice of decently priced food and the meals we saw being served appeared to be of good size and presentation. There is also a 10% discount on meals for all hotel residents. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would definite consider returning."

  • Top Tip:

"Buy your water from the Mega Market: it's only 35 cents compared to 1 lira many of the other shops charge.
Try the Adam & Eve restaurant on the main road about five minutes walk away. Food excellent and good value for money. Beer cheap at only 2.5 lira (about £1.20) per pint.
Try an all-inclusive 'Lazy Day' boat trip. We used Hek Tour (the owner's name is Hector :)) and only paid £11 each for an eight hour trip, with four swimming breaks, which included lunch of grilled chicken, burger, pasta and salad and free drinks (beer, vodka, soft drinks) for most of the day.
If you like walking, turn right when you hit the beach (a two minute walk from the hotel) and head away from Marmaris centre for a walk of around 3 miles along paved paths. You will pass lots of bars and restaurants, boat trip vendors etc and there's a grassy free beach about 2.5 miles away which offers some peace and tranquility.
Use the dolmus at 1.5 lira each per trip and visit the local city market and ampitheatre (some walking involved)"

  • Wayne from Croydon reviewed the Gold Stone Hotel

  • "Hotel was basic but fine for a one week break, everyone at the hotel was lovely very freindly and welcoming. Wouldn't worry about waking up for breakfast or having dinner there as there is SO much to choose from in Marmaris anyway. The Friends Bar/Restaurant next door was ideal for breakfast etc. Air con, fridge etc was all extra and the TV and other bits didnt work in the room but we didn't worry about that as you get what you pay for really.

    All in all excellent trip."

  • Top Tip:

"Beach only 2min walk from the hotel was excellent, Friends bar next door was best place to eat breakfast and have drink before went out for the night as you get 10% discount on eveything."

  • SHERRY from SWANSEA reviewed the Gold Stone Hotel

  • "We were a group of 4 adults and 1 7 year old. Upon check-in we were greeted by the receptionist Murat who very kindly took our luggage to our room. We had room 306 which had a sea-view! All of the staff were very friendly and always took time to talk to you and have a dance or two! Hi to Alex, Jimmy, Neil, Adam, George- and everyone else!

The hotel is in an excellent location- close to the beach, shops and dolmus route. The rooms were cleaned every day, the housekeepers were lovely and always greeted you. If you wanted air-con, it was an extra 60 lira for the week, it was a bit annoying as you had to keep pressing the various buttons nearly every time you turned it on otherwise it wasn't a sufficient flow of cool air (every time you vacated the room it went off shortly after)! There was a small hotel pool which had 5 sun loungers either side, this was pretty quiet in the day as most people went to the beach so you could relax. Also there was a pool table which was free of charge.

The food was nice and you had a lot for your money (guests get 10% discount)- when you order it is best to ask if the meal comes with chips, salad or rice as most of them do even though it doesn't state so on the menu- when I ordered a baguette it came with an unexpected mound of chips!!! The breakfast provided is a traditional turkish breakfast- there is a wide choice of food available- salami, eggs, cheese, olives, cucumber, tomato, bread and cereal. You can pay just over 5 lira for a full english breakfast if you wish. Drink prices are a bit like in the UK- it's about 3 lira (£1.20) for a soft drink and 30 lira (£12 for a house wine).

If you want to go on any excursions, it is best to ask someone to do book for you on reception as they can get you a really good deal. We decided to go on a jeep safari (£10), horse safari(£10) and boat trips. If there is a group of you, haggle the price- usually kids go free for the boat trip- best to do an all inclusive boat trip as all drinks- even lager(!) are included- we paid £12- unfortunately it doesn't include ice-cream or crisps- but you get lunch which you will find on nearly every trip consists of chicken fillet, pasta, salad and bread.

THANK YOU TO ALL STAFF WHO MADE OUR STAY VERY PLEASANT! We will definately return. So far we have been to Marmaris 6 times and must say that although we paid £80 per room per week, it is just as good if not better than the other hotels we have stayed at- and paid a lot more money for!"

  • Top Tip:

"Go to Al Fresco's restaurant- it is on the main road next to the Adam and Eve restaurant (turn left out of hotel, then left again up street where taxi rank and HSBC machine located, then left again) The food is very tasty (especially the mashed potato!) and well presented- and most of all very reasonably priced. The staff are very attentive and are very cheerful all the time. At 22:00 they have karaoke which is great fun- even my 7 year old son took part! Also there is a small play area and some games machines to keep children entertained.

Buy your water from Gima supermarket (around the corner of hotel on the main road)- 1 lira for a big bottle- the hotel charges 1.50 lira for a small bottle- just make sure you smuggle it in your beach bag!

    Fetch mosquito repellent!

When you buy clothes, jewellery, bags etc make sure you always haggle. If need be walk away- make sure you point out to the seller that they are not selling the real brand but a good copy! Think how much you would pay for a similar item in Primark for example and tell the seller this!- they will eventually lower the price as long as you are firm! Also keep bank cards out of sight as most traders now have PDQ machines!- if you haven't quite got as much money as the seller wants he/she will kindly inform you that you can pay the rest on your card! IF you do use your card make sure the seller deducts the bank charge- usually £2-£3! Also it is worth remembering that if you withdraw money, for every £100, you will be charged approximately £15 (I am with Lloyds TSB)- check with your bank before you go."

People from much posher hotels were walking to ours solely for the friendliness and fun that the Friends staff provided each night. We highly recommend it."

  • Carol from Newcastle Upon Tyne reviewed the Gold Stone Hotel

  • "The hotel had a great location next to the beach just behind Faros beach club, very centrally located to many bars and restaurants. The rooms were cleaned every day and fresh towels every other day most rooms with a sea view. The staff were very friendly and the hotel also has the friends bar and restaurant attached and the meals are at a very reasonable price.
The only disappointment was the pool was very small and only had 10 sunbeds not enough for the hotel guests and were in the shade for most of the day."

  • Top Tip:

"The best bar for the best in R&B music is Cream a very popular bar, The Aussie Bar is great for families and has a karaoke and Gary the owner is great fun. The best of the restaurants is the Mayfair very reasonable prices and fast friendly service you can get a 5 course meal for around £15.00 for a couple."

  • "We would recommend this hotel to anyone going to Marmaris, the rooms are clean, and linen and towels changed regularly. We had no problems whatsoever. The bar and restaurant downstairs (Friends) is great, they have a good bunch of lads working there and the food is wonderful.

Give it a try, we'll be returning later on in the year for another couple of weeks."

  • kate from brighton reviewed the Gold Stone Hotel

  • "There was no hot water in the mornings, and sometimes little in the the evenings. As it was the end of the season the hotel stopped putting out the self service breakfast, which was not a problem, but it just meant you got what you were given rather than having the choice.
The hotel itself is lovely, the staff are nice and the rooms are very clean. If you like peace and quiet ask for a room the opposite side to the bar, as its gets rather noisy to the early hours.
The half board food meant you didnt get a choice of dinner, just whatever they gave you. It was ok, but alot of the time the dishes were chicken.
All in all a nice place to stay."
