"My daughter made a last minute booking for a self-catering holiday and chose Algarve Gardens. We chose shuttle transfer from Faro and had to wait on the coach for a while to collect other persons, a better choice would have been a taxi, no waiting about. A little disappointed with the apartment in that any idea of self-catering was not really on the cards. Two hob rings, no grill, no microwave or even a little toaster which would make it a little better. Also the kitchenette area was in need of urgent reburbishment, the fridge opened by using a piece of cord attached to two of the largest screws I have ever seen! Wash basin was badly cracked and the mirror definitely need renewing. We chose not to use the wash basin just shower.
The hotel restaurant was a little on the expensive side but the two restaurants nearby were OK. For younger people the daytime facilities were ideal but no night life at all unless you go into Albufeira and Vilamoura. Be careful of taxi fares. The hotel ordered us a taxi to go into Vilamoura one night which cost us 22 euros. Whereas the cabs which can be picked up from the rank in Vilamoura only cost 15-16 euros.
The beach and the weather were perfect, beach walks ideal so all in all it was a case of swings and roundabouts."

"As a group of runners the excellent sports facilities and location suited us very well. However, many people would find it too isolated as there are few bars and restaurants in the immediate area, unless you had a car.
The accommodation is spacious but fairly basic and a little dated. We had four apartments and all varied in their equipment.
The location is great if you like walking - beach, roads, clifftop trails. Vilamoura Marina is about 40 mins walk away.
Not sure it would suit families - little organised entertainment - or young people wanting a lively holiday - too far from the action.
Two more positive points:
The apartments are now under the ownership of the 4* Alfamar Hotel and as such you can use the facilities in the hotel - indoor and outdoor pool, sauna/jacuzzi, bar., etc
The hotel connects directly to the beach, which is abosutely outstanding - miles of golden sands and red cliffs like the postcards and not very busy either."

"Hotel is not centrally located and no nice restuarant bars a walkable distance away. Rooms are clean but basic (a good 3 star). Staff unfriendly and unhelpful. Pool area very nice.
Certainly feel you can find a better hotel, location for the price."

"The lack of air conditioning was sometimes badly needed during the fortnight that I was there and the hotel was further away from a choice of eating facilities."

"really poor accomodation miles from hotel 3rd storey no lift , queues for breakfast not worth 1 star"

"The Algarve Gardens is the self-catering part of the large Hotel Alfamar Sports Resort. It consists of about 96 bungalows and apartments. I took a studio apartment with my wife and 2 yr old girl, and it was ok for size. They provided a cot which was positioned in the main room next to our bed. There was a seperate bath/shower/toilet room and a kitchen.
The Kitchen has a 2-ring electric cooker, pans, cutlery and crockery, fridge (with freezer compartment) but no washing-up liquids or any other cleaning aids are provided.
The on-site shop carries basic essentials, but we bought all our food at the Lidl in Albufeira.
There is a bus service in the village but we hired a car which was far more convenient and less stressful.
Needless to say, the sun-loungers by the pool were all taken every day, but there is plenty of grassy space around the pool, and the beach is only 100metres further on. Lovely sandy beach, but watch out for the strong rip tide in the sea. (The coloured flags on the beach tell you when it's safe).
The clientele was largely Portuguese and German, but most staff speak English and were very helpful.
Although its billed as a Sports Resort, we saw very little sport taking place - the tennis and football pitches were never used during our 10 days there.
There is a small childrens pool on the bungalow complex, which was quieter and a bit warmer than the main outdoor pool. (There is a small indoor pool too.)
Overall, it was a very enjoyable holiday and we would not hesitate to return there again."

"Hotel was in a fantastic position being right on the beach! Garden, pool and outside facilities were also beautiful and provided a great relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant had a good choice of breakfast however i think the lunch and dinner option could be improved to provide more 'local specialities' in place of the numerous international selections."

"The hotel was classed as four star so we were suprised on the few occasions that we ate there that there was no air conditioning, this was required considering the outside temperature was 30 degrees. Situation wise it had it's own pathway to the excellent beach, but although there were 3 restaurant/bars on the main road from the hotel it was 15/20 minute walk to a place called the square where you we found several more restaurant/bars along with a supermarket and a couple of shops. Although we were put in the high rise ( 4 floors) studio apartments (a shock to the system when we arrived), they were adequatly furnished and cleaned on a regular basis, not somewhere you would cook a meal but why would you want to. The local solar Bar/Restaurant is where we ate the most ,the food was superb and reasonably priced and the staff could not do enough for you. On the whole we had a enjoyable stay, it was a little remote but we liked the peace and quite."

"This was a self catering venue and in my view did not have the necessary or adequate kitchenware to allow you to cook decent meals. I also feel that items such as cloths and washing up liquid ect should be included in the price. If this is not the case then they should state this when you are booking because it adds additional costs to your holiday.
There was only 1 comfy armchair seat but 2 adults."
