Ian from Glasgow reviewed the Avenida Palace Lisboa Hotel
"We stayed here as part of a 3 centre holiday, 6nts Albufeira, 4 nts Lisbon, 6 nts Alvor.
The Avenida Palace has grand decor and a bit of the wow factor! Take time and effort to visit each floor as the decor is different on each landing. There is a nice bar and an opulent lounge area.
The rooms have good air con and a great shower ( dodgy hairdryers though). A safe key is also provided free of charge. It was spotlessly clean although I agree with earlier comments about the occasional whiffy drain smell when you enter the room!
The breakfasts were very good, although exactly the same each day (roast beef for breakfast was a bit strange).
This hotel is in a great location for seeing the city. It is 5 mins walk to Commercial Square where most of the transport links are available (trams and sightseeing tours) and has 2 metro stations in the close vicinity. It is right next door to a train station where you can take the train to Sintra which is well worth a visit - very picturesque but quite hilly (regular trains and very reasonable fares).
We absolutely loved Lisbon and this hotel but I do agree with previous comments that very great care is required of valuables when walking or travelling by tram."
Top Tip:
"Trams/ elevators were all 1.40E no matter how many stops - make sure you have coins for the trams.
The tram to Belem takes you to where the Belem custard cakes are made (yum). - the pastelria is huge through the back and you can watch them making the cakes. Also Jeronimos monastery closeby (closed on a Monday - guess what day we went!).
The Discovery monument is also within close walking distance to the monastery with a great view from the top.
There is an elevator 3 mins walk from the hotel to Bairro Alto where lots of restaurants/ bars are situated- take care of valuables.
The tram sightseeing tour was quite good to get a feel of some of the areas - failry expensive at 17E each.
The castle has great views but is more of a restored ruin. Trams run to here but again beware of pickpockets."
