PAUL from SOUTHAMPTON reviewed the Amaraigua Hotel
"YOU SELL HOTEL AS A 4 STAR WHEN THE SIGN OUTSIDE CLEARLY SHOWS IT AS BEING A 3 STAR HOTEL AND IT IS DEFINITELY A 3 STAR AT BEST. IF OUR ROOM WAS ANY SMALLER WE WOULD NOT HAVE EVEN GOT A DOUBLE BED IN IT. THE RESTAURNT STAFF WERE VERY GOOD BUT THE FOOD WAS VERY AVERAGE EVEN FOR A 3 STAR HOTEL. "

"HOTEL RIGHT ON BEACH BUT BEACH VERY STEEP AND NOT REALLY SUITABLE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN OR POOR SWIMMERS."
"Whilst the exterior and public areas (including the corridors) of the hotel were to a good or very good standard the room we were allocated was in some need of refurbishment and redecorating. It was much smaller than the one shown in the hotel’s own brochure and was very cramped. If the hotel are in the process or considering redecorating such rooms, might I suggest someone who can use a paint brush? I have seldom seen such a poor standard of painting (e.g. brush marks around door frames, between ceiling and walls etc). The desk/dressing table and the nice large wall mirror behind it both looked new, but were largely obscured by the television set (poor reception on most channels) which, if anything, was too big for the room and there was certainly no need to acquire a remote control from reception. Also, although we had a shower in our room instead of a bath/shower, it would have been nicer if the bathroom fittings had all matched. The bathroom was clean, but looked dated and in need of refurbishment. If you want a shower before dinner then you will either need to have it very early or after the first guests are already in the restaurant, otherwise be prepared for a cold shower, one cup of water at a time.
As far as the hotel food is concerned then the only real complaint would be the lack of choice, partly due to the fact that a number of the dishes on offer at lunch and dinner were aimed more towards children (e.g. French fries, burgers, fish/chicken nuggets etc), limiting the overall choice. This meant that it was sometimes difficult to get a “complete” adult meal. A very mix and match approach to meat/fish dishes and those other dishes that were supposed to be accompanying them, which meant that some meal times were better than others (but a good chance to try eclectic dinning). That said, the food was reasonably hot, was available up until the restaurant closed, and included some very good dishes (lasagne, pasta and beef to name a few).
The hotel staffs (reception and restaurant) were very helpful and friendly (especially the restaurant staff), less so the bar staff.
Overall I cannot say that this is, or every will be, a four star hotel, but with a little work on the rooms etc then I think that this could and indeed should be a very good three star hotel."

"Champions Bar (open 7:30pm-3:00am) for a relaxed drink. Located in a wide side street (the one with The Rovers Return) on the other side of the road to the hotel, about one or two roads down towards Santa Susanna.
New Crown & Anchor , drink & a meal. 4-5 minutes walk to the right of the hotel, also on the other side of the road (Plazza Cabo Fradera esquina Avda)."
"not very good entertainment , the snacks are good but the restuarant was mor German & Dutch food and was small. the rooms were o.k. and clean the hotel is located right on the beach. around the pool area not very clean "

"hotel is in the centre so plenty of shops around and bars"
"The Hotel is 3 Star as it says on the front of the hotel (and not 4* as TravelReplublic suggests). Having said that, the hotel was clean, convenient and the staff seemed friendly and helpful when asked. I have stayed at other AI hotels around the Costa Brava and found that the entertainment in all of low standards (but that doesn't bother me too much as I tnd to go out on the town and not milk the all inclusive 'cow'). As for the guests, there were lots of people from Holland and Germany who I found to be pleasant - so too the Brits until they were falling about in the corridors at all hours drunk. I have read many reviews on this and other sites as to how unfriendly and helpful the staff are (not just this hotel) in the Costa Brava. If you are rude to them then expect it in return. Summary - Pleasant hotel/ near to beach as it is actually on it - expect rowdy Brits on All Inclusive Frenzies. Ian D. from Leeds"
"The hotel staff went out of there way to make our stay a memorable and more relaxing break than we anticipated. The food was great and the rooms were kept extremely clean and tidy. Hotel situated right on the beach with some views to die for! You have to walk under an underpass when wanting to look around Malgrat and to get to and from your transfers but the underpass is cleaned daily and although graffiti ridden its not at all an unpleasant place to walk even in the evenings. "I have come home with a few handy tips. 1) Don't eat the horse balls as they are disgusting. 2) Take a Dolfijet boat to Lloret De Mar and Tossa De Mar as they are really nice places with lots of shops etc. 3) If you like walking take a look at Santa Susana as there are some nices places to see up along there to.... 4) If you want to buy cigarettes make sure you get them from the tabaconist's which is extremely close to the hotel. New laws state that grocery stores and super markets are not allowed to provide them anymore and a lot of bars although they have the fag machines are quite funny about you popping in to there use them and walking out without even buying a pint or something to eat there.
Favorite shop for holiday gifts: Matahari
Favorite Sports Bar: The Rovers Return
Favorite Breakfast: Robin Hood
Favorite Entertainment Night in the hotel: Karaoke!

Nichola from Milton Keynes reviewed the Amaraigua Hotel
"Hotel standards were very good , location was absolutely perfect . However the food was disappointing , very random selection of food , far too many chips , sprouts isnt something which I would choose to have for my lunch whilst on holiday !!! There was sausages on the menu at every mealtime. The food was edible but the choice was limited . The pool bar did serve snacks - however this is not clearly advertised and the bar staff were not very forthcoming in letting you know about this service as it seemed that guests were an inconvenience to them .
Entertainment was ok with a parrot show , reptile show and karaoke and disco nights . Wouldnt say this is a 4 star but tha fact it is on the beach definitely makes up for everything else."
Top Tip:
"Excellent location to explore the coastline , train station is a 10 minute walk from hotel . Frequent train service to Barcelona which costs less than 7 euros for a return ticket and it takes you to the centre of Barcelona (placa de Catalunya). Less than 3 euros for return ticket to Tordera where there is a large market on a Sunday . Train goes to Blanes , Calella , Pineda, Mataro . The Black Bull pub (almost opposite the hotel on the road that runs vertical to the beach) has very welcoming staff , the fast food / kebab restaurant across the road sells Pincho (chicken skewer) for 2.50 which are great after having a few beers - also sells a nice hotdog . Claire from Christchurch reviewed the Amaraigua Hotel
"We chose this hotel because it was smaller than most and because it was located next to the beach. When we arrived the reception staff were lovely and our room was situated on the ground floor to the side of the hotel next to a car park which had several camping vehicles but it was a nice quieter part of the hotel
The pool was nice as was the beach and my son and I loved the outdoor jaccuzi.
The entertainment was average but we don't worry too much about night time entertainment.
In the restaurant the food was average except on Gala night when there was an excellent selection of seafood and lovely desserts. There was however snacks available in the day which consisted of pizza, toasted sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs. These were freshly cooked for you while you wait which was excellent.
The negative side of this holiday was the attitude of the bar staff which varied from surly to rude. They upset quite a lot of guests but we just took it as part of the course and made an even greater attempt to smile and be friendly. We have stayed in hotels where guests are very rude themselves to staff and never a please or thank you and we have commented that bar staff have a lot to put up with but this was not the case at this hotel. They seemed to resent the fact that guests existed and would make you stand and wait while they talked to each other in Spanish but if Spanish guests came along they would laugh and chat to them and even serve them straight away, no matter how many people were waiting to be served drinks and snacks. Instead of being annoyed we just took it as part of the holiday which we could smile about when we got home. Even my son said that he was reminded of Basil Fawlty and his rudeness! One evening my 11 year old son went to use the hot drinks machine with his father at 11.15 to get his bed time drink and the barman came from behind the bar, pushed my son away from the machine and turned it off. The last orders at the bar was 11.30 so I think this was uncalled for.
We still had a nice week and we still smile as we remember some of the rude incidents we witnessed at the bars!! This was just a quick squeezed in break as we have been away several times already this year."

"The hotel is just along from Santa Susanna which has a lovely cosmopolitan feel to it. Also the cheapest place for tobacco."
"The hotel was clean and comfortable. The food was adeqate but chips with everything. It would have been nice to have had more choice of potatoes and vegetables."
"hotel was great, lovely and clean throughout our stay. Hotel quite small compared to others but still offered good quality food. There was not a vast choice but the food was still lovely though.
It was also nice having the beach on your doorstep."
"The hotel was lovely and in a lovely location, the only drawback was that there were no English speaking staff in the resturant which was a problem as my mum has celiocs disese and she has to eat gluten free, none of the staff could understand so my mum has to live on salad"
"No problems staff friendly, hotel clean, food fine. Only comment I would make that the notice board was not in reception and we came upon it by accident as staff did not mention it to us. As a result we missed the market on the Thursday as we had went into Barcelona for the day."

"Railway within 10 mins walk og hotel and the shops along that way were lovely"
