ARTHUR from COALVILLE reviewed the Balcon Del Mar Apartments
"Hotel was very clean and rooms were spacious. Nice large living room compact kitchen but room to work there. Bathroom was of a good size and very clean. Also large terrace with sea view with sun all day long, which was excellent. No air con, but we went in July/August and rooms were not too hot at all because of the windy, cooler nights you get in Lanzarote. Both pools were very clean but very small, although, for saying it was peak season, we never had trouble finding a sun bed. Please note that there is not a courtesy room for those with late flights, but you can keep your room on for 25 euros, providing the hotel is not booked up. A big thankyou to Steve who worked the pool bar of an evening, he's one of the best in our opinion.
Location turned out to be OK, with plenty of resturants near by.! Old town is down the hill from hotel about 10/15 minute walk. New town is about a 15/20 minute walk, and that's just to the start of it. It's a long promenade, full of much of the samish bars and resturants. beach at new town is huge and beautiful with loads of watersorts and space to play with kids.
Weather was fantastic and with a cooling breeze to make it bearable. "

"as they all say, you get what you pay for. we paid £210 for flights and self catering accommodation...cheap so i wasnt expecting hotel equivalent service/rooms.
rooms were basic:
- twin beds (sheets changed maybe once while we were there, and only cos we asked for them to be changed)
- towels changed twice
- rooms were "cleaned" i.e. beds made and a little tidy up. Didnt look like they cleaned the bathroom/bathtub
- kitchen with cutlery - though we ate out for all meals
- NO AIR CON - quite annoyed at this, and they fact that they charge you about 15-20 euro to hire a fan!
- few insects around, no cockroaches in our apartment but a few scurrying around at night in the complex
staff were friendly enough, bar staff friendly too
drinks at the bar were very expesive, same as london bar prices (5 euro for a drink)
pool was always cold, but its nice n refreshing given the heat.
2 pools, both quite deep unless you can swim!
not a lot of space for sunbathers, gotta get there early to reserve your space with your towel :)
not too far from the beach, but its on a hill so the walk back was always tiring (cab from the main strip wont cost you more than 4euro at night, 3euro in the day)
not too many restaurants nearby, but the strip is maybe a 15min walk away and everything is there (bars, clubs, restaurants, etc)
if your looking for luxury, this isnt the place for you to stay...
if you're 18 and you want a cheap holiday, not too far from everything then this is the place to stay.
would i stay here again...NO, but thats cos i wouldn't go back to lanzarote!! lol
"
Top Tip:
"the main strip has so many places to choose from, mostly doing pizza/pasta.
one nice chinese restaurant (expect the rude waiter, waitress was nice enough though), forgotten the name but its at the very beginning of the strip and its very well lit...good food.
a nice indian called jewel of india, made a good change from pizza and chips daily!
lanis tex-mex is also good - tasty food
definately check out the casino, take your passport! tables are cheap and theres also video roulette, slots etc...makes a change from clubbing every day as most of the places seemed to have kids that looked like they were 16 and had managed to sneak away from their parents (cigarette in one hand, bacardi breezer in the other!)
my top tip would have to be...even though flights/accom was cheap for us, everything else wasnt. food was the same as what you'd expect to pay for 2people eating (about 25-30 euros for dinner) and that was without a bottle of wine or alcoholic drink. most of our money was spent on food to be honest.
if you're looking for culture, theres not a great deal to see. we did the grand tour which is a whole day and you see most of the things there are worth seeing (north and south of island). that cost 55 euro from lastminute (some tour company based out there).
dont do the camel ride which costs 20euro each by itself, hire a car and go there, its in timanfya...10 euro for 2 people
hire a car, lanzarote is so small and its so hard to get lost, we took only 1 wrong turn! everything is clearly signposted and there arent even many cars there.
if you hire a car, visit orzola (north of island, mayb 1hour max to get there). an amazing white/yellow sand beach, crystal clear water and quite secluded(not many people) so its a nice getaway for the day.
i personally would never go back to lanzarotte, but thats more so cos theres nothing to do there other than catch sun. same as the other canary islands. arricife looked much nicer than peurto del carmen"

"i had a nice stay here the rooms were kept clean and the cleaners came round every other day. the appartment i stayed in was very tired and could do with a good paint job. also the window in the kitchen and bathroom were both cracked, the bathroom in particular had whole in the glass which didn't look very plesent. all the windows had bars fitted rather thank shutters which kind of made me feel like i was in a prison. also the kitchen facilitys were not great. all i had was two way hob, toaster and kettle. i was traveling alone so i prefered to cook for my self so an oven and/or a microwave would have been preferd. overall it was ok for the money i paid and the beds were very comfy. Also it said on the wedsite room facilitys included sat/cable tv but i didn't have one i think you had to pay extra. but i wasn't on holiday to watch tv."
Top Tip:
"Take your own pillows the spainsh pillows don't provide good support. there are lots of nice resturants in the area too many to list just take a walk you'll find them all good value for money."

"Hotel was great. Having stayed in these apt with my husband on a previous holiday i decided they would be ideal for my first trip abroad on my own. I certainly made the right choice. The reception staff made me realy welcome and i felt safe from the beginning to the end of my holiday. The pool bar is great which is run by an english couple who make you feel very welcome and the food is great. Apt are very spatious with great sea views from the balcony. I came home feeling realy rested and relaxed. I have traveled with travel republic a few times and have saved money on all occasions would defo recommend them. "

"Belcon De Mar is an excelent apartment block on top of the hill, in the old town of Puerto del Carmen. The rooms are very spacious and clean, and the kichen even has an oven. as the apartments are on top of a hill, I would not recomend them to older or disabled people. Apart from this, they are an excelent base to explore the Island from and are very reasonably priced."
Top Tip:
"Hire a car from the airport and save your transfer cost to fund the car for a week. You will see a lot more of the beauty of this special island."

"Enjoyed our stay in Balcon Del Mar Apartments, we found them very clean and staff were friendly. Every thing you need is in the apartment including TV with Channel 4, toaster, fridge and loads of hot water. No entertainment in the complex but this did'nt matter as we went out most nights. Convient location to old town, transport system exellent. This was our 6th visit to Lanzarote off season and no doubt we will return. "
Top Tip:
"We visited Puerto Calero, a fvie minute taxi ride from Puerto del Carmen, 4euro. This is a marina with a range of bars restaurants and designer shops. McSorley's bar provided an excellent meal, braised steak and onions, 'delicious'. Very relaxing atmosphere in Puerto Calero, worth a visit."

"Hotel was excellent value for money. The rooms were very clean and tidy with regualr visits from the maids. Rooms were very spacious and had a stunning sea view. We went out of season and as a result the pool was a absoloutly freezing but it was a nice relief from the burning sun. Tip - just jump dont test water or you will never get in!!
Overall very impressed. Excellent if you want a cheap but quality hotel.

"Roomy well equipped self catering apartments, maid service 6 days a week, very clean complex, friendly english speaking staff, decor a litle tired but excellent value for money. Walking distance to lots of restaurents, bars, supermarkets etc, situated on the top of a hill, bus stop just outside the main gate, walk not that bad at all, taxi very cheap if a little worse for wear. Would definately return to the Balcon Del Mar appartments !"

"Airline was as stated - no frills. But fine although there was a huge fight on the plane on the return which was unpleasant for other paying travellers.
Apartment were impressive, they were kept clean and tidy, cleaners daily, the bar served good food during the day, the only down side was the pools were FREEZING."

"The apartment was kept very clean, only small complaint was not much hot water for showering, otherwise very pleasant stay."
Top Tip:
"The best beaches are at Playa Papagayo and Playa Mujeres (next bay) was even better. Several good restaurants in Puerto Del Carmens old town, The Red Crab (El Crangrejo Rojo) boasting great views over the harbour. Delicious freshly caught fish (we did try, very good), flambe dishes, char-grilled meat, rabbit a speciality apparently, but we didn't try it. Dolce Vita an upstairs Italian restaurant with home cooked food, and the restaurant underneath, name escapes me, had fantastic game dishes of the season. Only thing we didn't like was the amount of salt used, if you don't like it steer clear of the Canarian potatoes! "
