"The hotel is lovely and the staff friendly and welcoming. There are some bars and restaurants close to hand but only a few. We stayed AI and although the choice is fairly limited we always found something to suit all three of us. The profile age seems to be 60+ but this doesn't prevent you having a lovely time with young children or adolescents, as long as you don't have great expectations of any kind of entertainment and are happy to make your own. The indoor pool comes in handy in case of inclement weather!"

"the breakfast deal was very good.the mini kitchen was very useful."

"We were self catering and hired a car for the week so we only used the hotel as base to lay our heads and the occasional swim. Self catering facilities in the room were adequate and the two pools were never busy. Hotel is rather sprawled out and may not suit all. Best of all, the deal we had with Travel Republic made our stay incredible value.
Not a problem for us, but it appeared the hotel and surrounding area was not wheel chair friendly."

"The hotel is pretty basic really it is comfortable but the self catering rooms could do with updating with better cooking facilities for the self caterer - the bars and the pools are good quality, Garajau is small with only a few restaurants but those we used were very nice with good quality food."

"Hotel in need of a very major refurbishment.
Not all activities as stated available.
BMTOURS A COMPLETE DISAPOINTMENT " still inproving" THAY NEED TOO.
WOULD NOT REVISIT."

"I booked at the last moment and didn't checkout the hotel like I usually do before booking. We were both unhappy with the Dom Pedro Hotel. Our room was in block 6 which meant we had a 320 yard walk each time we went to the hotel, or back to our room, going back to the room was up quite a steep slope along a busy road. The room and hotel had no air conditioning which meant that the room was hot, if you opened the door to get colder air into the room there was a constant barking of guard dogs in the houses nearby, I counted over eight of them, often barking till midnight and more starting back up again from 6.00 AM. It was a nightmare. I had to buy some earplugs from the chemist across the road, he laughed when I told him why I needed them and said that other people had been in for them as well. The food was basic, breakfast being the best, the entertainment was the same thing every night and got very boring, half the staff were very good and friendly the other half were pretty bad. I would never go back to this Hotel, it was the 2nd. worse Hotel I have ever been in and I have been in quite a few in many countries over the years. Definately not recomended."

"Hotel made up of 6 interlinked blocks on one side of main street through Garajou. Each room has a seaview but lower numbered blocks closer to hotel amenities. Parts of Blocks 3 & 4 look out over the hotel chains island laundry and service storage areas. Ancient shower and limited cooking facilities[ no kettle].
The service and housekeeping was good; did not eat in hotel as plenty of reasonably priced restaurants with good choices of food nearby. Not much to do in Garajou, which is 10 kms approx from Funchal [hourly bus service]; but local hire car facility available [£80 for 3 days Rate A vehicle]. Day sightseeing trips available [West better than East;Nuns valley 1/2 day trip (rear of Funchal/Monte) OK if free].
Musical entertainment every evening : bit "samey". Outdoor pool not heated and bar service not brilliant. Generally good value and quiet base but not close to water or Funchal!"

"The room was a good size and had a balcony, small tv and bathroom. The air conditioning didn't do much though. The breakfast buffet was average, not a great choice of fresh stuff. The pool is a bit small but the poolside garden area is ok, quite peaceful. There were some cockroaches on the ground floor of the hotel, we only saw a few dead ones the maids had killed. They didn't come to our room on the third floor even though we left food out. The hotel is quite a way from any proper centre or village - 40 minutes walk along a busy road to Canico- and you're stuck with the restaurants and shops immediately opposite unless you want to fight with local buses. But there's at least 5 restaurants opposite the hotel, and a dozen little food and souvenir shops."

"Although complex was big the pool area was always quite quiet and relaxing food wasvery good.Service was very good"

"A very pleasing stay, we couldn't have asked for more. The hotel was clean and well run. It had three pools and lots of activities for my teenage son. Our room had fantastic views over the sea and was quiet at night."

"The room was basic but clean. The air conditioning in the room didn't work. It was also noisy due to lots of dogs in the local area, which often woke us up in a morning.
We found the reception staff to be a little rude too - there was a mix up about the date that we were due to leave the hotel and even though this was due to their mistake, the did not apologise for the inconvenience caused to myself and my partner.
The breakfast at the hotel was fine, with plenty of food available, though the same pretty much every day."

"Positively - the staff were friendly, polite and helpful. The drinks generous. Rooms were clean. It was not a noisy hotel. We were put into block 1, complained and were moved to block 5 with no trouble at all.
Negatively - the food tasted disgusting with very limited choice. The hotel is in 6 blocks side by side going up a hill. Blocks 1-4 were in bad need of update and painting and had a smell to them, block 5 was ok - had been modernised and did not smell. The entertainment alternated between one man and a duo - the duo were not very good."

"The hotel was fine - a little dated but it is only a 3 star. We got the impression that most people were given rooms beginning with 11 on arrival - we had 1102 - which was quite substandard and not a very good view .. why did we get that impression? Nobody challenged us as to why we wanted to move it was just accepted. Eventually we got 6103, a much better room. Also aware this happened to others on their arrival. We went all inclusive which was fine, the food was a bit similar most nights in terms of choice but tasty enough. Most of the staff were very helpful and friendly, especially Celeste and Antonio others not so - no different from anywhere else. Entertainment is limited to a Scottish fella on the organ (He is good though) and two duos (not quite so good) who rotate during the week. Garajau as a place is OK, one main street which the hotel seems to be built all the way along. The local bus ride into Funchal is a must as a white knuckle ride - 1.55 euros one way and is the best way to introduce yourself to the Island - taxi's, and there are many, vary in price so worth haggling. The Hotel to the Botanical gardens should be 10 euros - it is 12 to 15 euros all the way into Funchal. You can hire a taxi to do the tours - West, North, central although most of them are by mini but and the guides are very good and proud of Madeira. As an Island Madeira is beautiful and the mountain views something to behold but make sure you have your walking boots on - it is very steep!!!!!"

"Good hotel to stay in for the night and doing your trips around the island during the days. Easy acces to motorway (Via Rapida), very good food (half board), mostly older people from Germany and UK."

"Hotel is in six blocks in a line, block six is furthest away from dining room for meals, but closer to the pool. It is a little bit dated, but very clean. We found all staff, from reception, to pool bar cleaners, to be very helpfull.
The hotel is on main bus routes into Funchal, the bus stop is directly accross from hotel. The only negative point, although very good, the entertainment seemed to cater for the older person. It possibly could have varied a bit more for the younger people in the hotel."

"The staff at the hotel obviously didn't like English people, they catered for Germans and always served them first regardless if English were waiting beforehand. It wasnt possible to have a drink and a cigarette as there was no smoking area, you had to leave the bar and stand outside the hotel on the main road to have a cigarette.
The food was very bland and boring, each night it was fish/ chicken or fish/ beef. The hotel was clean but basic and was far away from any kind of entertainment. The bus stops outside the hotel and it's best to use the service and go into Funchal for day/ evening entertainment."

"The hotel needed redecorating in places but this was not really a problem. However, it was very clean and the maid service was excellent -fresh towels and room tidied every day. The staff were very friendly which was amazing considering the hotel was seriously understaffed. This was a big problem in the bars; I waited 20 minutes to be served one day. The pool bar closed far too early [17.00]; it would have been a pleasant place for pre dinner drinks. The food was good, varied menu and plenty of it. The live entertainment was OK except for one bad singer [who 'sang' more nights than the others unfortunately!]"

"Staff were good & offered me a choice of 2 rooms when I asked to change - too close to the road & therefore noisy. Pool is nice but garden smaller than appears from the photos, but not too crowded in June. However the hotel seems to be in a cloudy area & there were only 2 days out of 10 which were cloud-free."

"Overall a very good value hotel, I can recommend.Breakfast was excellent, and the buffet evening meal good. The room was adequate but would definitely benefit from an update of decor and fittings, and I would have appreciated a hair dryer, but the public areas ,restaurant ,pools were good.We also found the room quite noisy especially early in the morning. The plumbing runs through the bedroom area and sliding doors and chairs dragging across the floor of the room overhead woke us every day.If you want to sleep late, book a top floor room!"
