"We booked 3 star and that was what we got!! Comfortable, good food, unspectacular but more than adequate. Location good for travel and entertainment. Steep hill not suitable for some less able. Staff not the greatest!"

"Tired old hotel in need of refurbishment, the elevators are very much in need of replacement and if you are trying to get down in the morning to breakfast expect up a twenty minute wait. Rooms basic, do not expect anything special here including no air con in rooms."

"The staff were very friendly and helpfull.
The food was excellent.
The entertainment was average at best.
The wine was prohibitively expensive."

"Good location. Good service from reception. Good quality breakfast, plenty to eat. Maid service very good. All in all good hotel."

"We stayed a week, half board, at the Dorisol Estrelicia, Madeira. On the positive side, the staff were helpful and friendly, the food was reasonable, the courtesy bus ran to and from Funchal about half a dozen times during the day and the hotel was fairly well located near to local shops and bars. On the negative side, the entrance to the hotel was at the top of a fifty yard, steep hill, off the road, the bathroom fittings were dated and the 'garden view' we were expecting turned out to be derelict land, used partly as a car park and partly for fly-tipping . In fairness, on the return journey in the courtesy bus, it reversed up the hill dropping you outside the entrance."

"Excellent value for money allthough room was on the small side.Found the buffet breakfast very good and reasonably well organised without any of the chaos mentioned in previous ratings. Hotel was very clean throughout. Location is at the top of a steep hill but good excercise to work off excessive dining habits.Free parking at the bottom of the hill on a very rough patch of ground"

"The hotel is a bit tired, the food somewhat limited but adequate."

"easy jet need to explain their charges better. Hotel fine."

"Hotel was adequate for a three star though a bit tired. Quite a few older people but this did mean there was pleanty of room round the pool. Water quite cold but did manage to swim. Mainly French tourists but most Europeans were represented. Went in the Easter break Apr 08 but I still thought a bit expensive for the standard £440 for 9 nights B&B Twin room no Balcony. About 200 steps to get to the front door so a bit of an effort but not as bad as you might imagine and the steps were very shallow. Madeira is hills everywhere so you need to get used to this anyway. I will go back to Madeira but will probably try another Hotel. Breakfast was basic but fresh and adequate."

"hotel was clean, friendly staff, reasonable food, liked the indoor pool facilty as well
Free coutesy bus to city centre was useful."

"Value for money the Estrelicia take some beating . We would definitely return there next time we go to Madeira."

"good basic accomodation clean well run hotel only complaited room was on the small side"

"Hotel clean, staff friendly, breakfast ok. Most rooms have no balconey and not very large. Definitely not for the infirm, up a very steep hill from road or 150 steps. Overall good value for money re Madeira, decent location."

"The place was cheap. Breakfast was poor (instant coffee! No real juice), the room was small but clean and OK. The corridoors are tiled, hence noisy. And the hotel had booked in a crowd of Portugese football supporters. Hell for 3 nights."

"Has everything that you should need, especially when you consider the price paid.
Breakfast is a free for all though, so would advise missing this and going into town where bargain food can be found from the street vendors."

"The staffs at the hotel were helpful and friendly and the hotel was very clean. They changed my room once once I explained that the original room I was allocated on arrival picked up the high winds making it difficult to relax and sleep. They changed my room straightaway without any hassles."

"Before booking this hotel we read the moans about it being on a 'hill' but found the location ideal. Only 30 minutes walk to the centre of Funchal (or take the regular courtesy bus) and the short 'hill' back to the hotel no problem even after a 5 or 6 hour walk on the Lavadas. Nothing is flat on Madeira, it's not suitable for wheelchairs or the very unfit and very few of the hotels don't have some sort of a climb. We booked half board and were pleasantly surprised by the originality and variation of the buffet -style dinner menu although there was a surprising lack of fresh friut (plenty of tinned) at breakfast with only bananas appearing two or three times on an island heaving with them. Some Brits moaned that eggs 'n bacon didn't appear every morning or chips every evening but this hotel has to cater for French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch & Scandinavian tastes and are doing a fine job. All the staff were pleasant and helpful. Our room was on the 10th floor, spacious, clean and in fairly good condition (not so the balconies which need a good paint) with a superb view over the sea and garden. Yes, there is a building site next door but we found them remarkably quite - unlike British & Spanish builders!"

"The hotel was very well equipped and the rooms were clean. It was difficult to relax by the pool, however, due to the amount of building renovations going on, which were very noisy.
This only affected one day as I am not a pool person, but people that lounge by the pool all day long would have been a bit put out!"

"Very nice Hotel for the price paid.Lots of facilities available including free car parking(even the expensive Hotels charge guests for parking !!)Rooms nicely furnished, bathroom huge.As the Hotel is on quite a steep hill,if you are not so good on your legs, possibly avoid. On the whole we enjoyed our stay here very much, and would book again."

"most enjoyable and would return weather was great for time of year"

"the accomodation is OK. the sevice of the reception staff is PERFECT!!!"
