"Really enjoyed this hotel it was beautiful. It is definitely the place for golfers which we are not !! this however was an advantage as we had the pool to ourselves- very nice.The gardens are amazing and as the hotel guests have free access to them a morning walk around the gardens after breakfast became the norm (breakfast by the way was excellent and the staff friendly and very attentive). We had mentioned that we were celebrating our anniversary and asked if a room upgrade was possible-no problem and no extra charge (stayed in a deluxe room which was big and well kept), we were also treated to a glass of sparkling and a little cake on the day (a nice touch). The one comment I would make regarding the rooms is the soundproofing between them in not good and you did hear occassionally hear your neighbours. We had booked on a B/B basis and to be honest it would probably be worth your while booking half board if you want to stay close and eat in the hotel, it was quite pricey. Saying that we did eat there on our last night and the food was really lovely, beautifully presented. We tended to go down into Funchal in the evenings where you found a good selection of restaurants to choose from however the taxi back to the hotel ranged in price from 12-17 euros which would have mounted up on a daily basis. We usually got the hotel shuttle bus down (free) and public transport back. The buses were on time and the drivers were very helpful. The hotel is a little out of the way but where else would you expect to find a 200 year old hunting lodge? It was lovely and quiet, very relaxing definitely not for anyone looking for a lively time - it suited us perfectly. The hotel is in the middle of building a spa and although my first thought when I saw the crane was typical a building site! this was not the case in fact we completely forgot that the building was going on and it caused no disruption to our holiday whatsoever."
Top Tip:
"We went on the Levada walk to Monte which started off close to the hotel ,the reception provided us with a map. Took about 4 hours stopping on the way for tea! a really nice walk, we then took the cable car down from Monte to Funchal a nice round trip."

"There's no need to look any further than Casa Velha Do Palheiro. We had intended to eat out in the evenings but their restaurant and staff would have been very difficult to beat - not cheap though! Very handy for some fantastic levada walks which start from the hotel grounds"

Property Summary
The manor house built in 1804 is traditional in style, the annex, a modern construction, where most rooms are located, maintains the style of the main building.
Most rooms are located in the Garden Wing, adjacent to the main building. These spacious rooms, which also feature a custom built golf bag rack are decorated in a classical style combining comfort and warmth. Whereas the wooden furniture is dark toned, the enthraling curtains and bedspreads are red. Most rooms have views of the adjoining gardens.
At the hotel's dining room, guests may enjoy a wide variety of menus presented by their award winning French chef who mixes traditional Portuguese dishes with culinary expertise, to create an à la Carte menu which has already been recognized in Madeira as one of the finest on the island.
The bistro restaurant is situated circa 500 metres from the hotel, in the Palheiro Golf Clubhouse. The ideal place for a light meal during the day or an early dinner, the panoramic terrace offers some of the most breathtaking views in Madeira, overlooking the bay of Funchal.
The hotel is ideal for people wanting to relax and get away from it all as well as the visiting golfer, as it is favourably placed adjacent to the par 71 championship Palheiro Golf Course. Guests staying here have access to a number of facilities and activities such as free entrance to the Palheiro Gardens, Sauna (no charge), steam room (no charge), aromatherapy and lymphatic drainage massage, a heated (23º) outdoor swimming-pool (16x8m), badminton, croquet, table tennis, billiards, card table, board games and an all weather tennis court (floodlit). Probably the top small hotel in Madeira and a favourite among many golfers and nature lovers. This graceful Relais & Chateaux hotel is the only hotel on the island to be found "on" a golf course. It is located 7 km from the city centre and 15 km from the airport.
