VERY FRIENDLY STAFF AND ATMOSPHERE
THERE IS A GOOD PUB WITH SPANISH MUSIC EVERY NIGHT SITUATED OPPOSITE THE POLICE STATION CALLED SAN BORODON
The first impression you get as soon as you arrive at Rio Calma hotel is more than great: impressive architecture and size, amazing outdoor space, pools, waterfalls exotic gardens... It definitely makes you wonder how much it cost to get built! And everything is really clean and well kept. However, the interior of the rooms doesn't match this. Not that they are bad at all, but not as luxurious as other 4* hotels I've been to. Services were also quite average: half of the gym equipment was broken, you needed to pay a lot to use any sports facilities (squash, tennis courts etc.), you also needed to pay 10 euros pp to use the spa and it would only be open few hours a day, room cleaning sometimes would not take place till late in the afternoon. Restaurant and food were good, nothing spectacular but you always found a big variety of freshly cooked food, salads, fruit and desserts. If it wasn't for the spectacular communal and outdoor space I would probably rate this as an average 4* hotel, but if you like to spend your day around and in the pool and the gardens admiring the views, then this is the place to be!
The rocky beach on the left of the hotel is a nice refreshing walk, and lots of cute friendly stripped squirrels will come to you if you offer them nuts or fruit! The beach of Costa Calma on the right of the hotel is only a short walk and is sandy and nice to swim.
The hotel is very tired, but is being renovated. It is very clean, and the staff were very helpful at all times. The food was not wonderful, but was alright, and certainly plenty of it. Most of the guests were German, which was not really a problem, but it was nice to have a chat with fellow countrymen from time to time. We were there for three weeks, and really enjoyed ourselves. The gardens were really lovely.
The beach was amazing! and the path through the gardens led down to the wonderful beach.
We found a lovely restaurant called Mama Mia's - excellent steaks! - Just 5 minutes walk away, and not expensive.
