  • joanne from haverfordwest reviewed the Jolie Ville Luxor Island Resort Hotel

  • "I have stayed at this hotel previously when it was under Movenpick ownership. It was always one of 'the' places to stay in Luxor and quality of service was unrivaled. This was my first time at the hotel since Maritim had taken over and I really don't know what has happened but it's lost what it had. The pool was a health hazard with bits of skin and goodness knows what floating around to the point that you could barely see your own hand. The pool towels were dirty and smelt as if they had been dried out and put back out. Security staff were ordered by management to search customers bags on entering for food and drink not bought in hotel and confiscated them. I heard of a diabetic customer who had been to the valley of the kings in the heat and returned feeling unwell with a half drunk bottle of water and a chocolate bar. She explained her condition but staff continued to confiscate the half drunk water and chocolate and told her she was welcome to buy a fresh bottle from the hotel shop. I understand the policy for eating food bought from outside the hotel and always abide by this so I objected to being searched like a criminal every time we went through the doors. I also object to the hotel advice which is not to eat or drink outside the hotel as you risk becoming ill. this is just an attempt to scare people and gain more custom. We spoke to several people who had not left the hotel at all due to this advice and that is so sad as they missed out on so much history and culture. Service in the restaurant has also dropped it's standards with staff refusing to clear tables for guests to take breakfast even after the previous guests had finished. When asked for more milk a carton of UHT was brought to the table. Hardly 5 star as the management claims the hotel is. The airconditioning in the room did not work effectively so we asked for it to be fixed by our return 5 hours later nothing had been done and never did get repaired so we suffered a very uncomfortable night in mid August, when we got to the pool the next morning there where sunbeds with sheets and pillows on so one wonders if other guests had been over heating too. Another big problem was guests reserving sunbeds prior to the pool opening then leaving them empty for over 5-6 hours whilst other families were left with no beds and staff not doing anything about it. It was apparent that they had been well tipped to reserve beds. We arrived mid morning and asked for 4 beds and were told by the pool attendant to go look for them ourselves as there were none free. We are very dissappointed with this drop in standards as the hotel has everything it needs to be a top class resort and have stayed many times and had an amazing time. I just hope this is a teething glitch and it will return to it's former service as it would be a huge loss if it continues to decline simply due to new ownership"

  • Top Tip:

"Do not eat in every night, you will be missing out on a huge selection of excellent standard restaurants with very reasonable prices. Why spend £5 for a glass of wine when you can get a bottle in town for the same price and experience the Egyptian life at the same time."

  • Alistair from St Albans reviewed the Jolie Ville Luxor Island Resort Hotel

  • "The hotel was excellent with very friendly and helpful staff. No where near the level of baksheesh hassle you'd expect in Luxor! As is always commented, the rooms do look a bit Butlins with old decor and twin beds shoved together, not 5 star by any means, but they are perfectly OK for coming back to after a hard day's temple viewing/sunbathing. The infinity pool is brilliant with a very nice atmosphere - a good mix of ages. The relaxing pool is nice for a bit of a sleep, with a hammock just waiting to be swung in..."

  • Top Tip:

"There is a sign outside Luxor airport stating it is 35LE from airport to Jolie Ville - fortunately we had checked with the htoel before hand and they said it should be 45LE. The taxi fleet chief, Ali, (or at least what seemed to be the bossman) tried it on with 'No, 35 Euro!'. Then when I said thanks but no thanks and started walking away, he came back to 45LE. After that he was very helpful - gave us his number to call for any future taxi needs. We checked out his quoted prices and they seemed pretty fair, so we used his man Khalid for all journeys after that, including the 4 hour trip to Hurghada! "

  • D from Hoylike reviewed the Jolie Ville Luxor Island Resort Hotel

  • "Hotel lovely and staff friendly - some too friendly and begging for money, particularly a small chef in the main restaurant. Food good and varied, but the four people in our party had upset tummies for the whole 7 days and had to consult the hotel doctor who wanted to give them 6 drugs and an injection, two of which were banned substances. Your rep in the resort was pretty useless with communications and could be better. Otherwise good holiday, Monarch airlines good, ticket delivery good and good value for money so thank you."

  • "This was my 4th time here and I loved it! Staff great , room kept clean with fresh sheets and towels (they will be updating them next year), room service good, Le Fleur A la Carte restaurant very good , breakfast excellent with plenty of choice. Superb adult pool and amazing infinity pool overlooking the Nile. Kid's club with lots of activities and a Playstation for the diehards!(take your own memory card and a few games to help you along). Lots of things to do at the hotel or just do what I do and laze around the pool! Do go sightseeing as there is so much to see in Luxor. Trip via boat to Dendera is the most recent thing I have done. Had a great day. I will be taking my 5th trip later on in the year and for sure I would stay nowhere else but the Jolie Ville."

  • Martin from Camberley reviewed the Jolie Ville Luxor Island Resort Hotel

  • "The hotel is a couple of Kms south from the centre of Luxor in the country, 15 L E (£1.50) by taxi from Winter Palace in very well kept grounds. The pool nearest the restaurent was closed for re-tiling but it did not seem to matter. Popular with British, French and German tourists. The standard of catering was high, the exec chef being european. The accommodation was a little tired but it has been taken over by a ? german hotel group so they might be looking at this. The security is very high with nearly a dozen guards in place. The hotel runs a free minibus and motor launch to the Winter Palace. The staff are helpful and friendly"

  • "This is fantastic the gardens are wonderfully kept and are a great place to relax after a hard morning sight seeing. the staff are all very frendily and extremly efficiant. the food in the buffet restraurant is very good and varied are is the BBQ on the terrace with fantastic views of the nile. We ate in the Fleur alacarte restraurant one night this was a disapointment as it has a good reputation. we had to wait 1 hour for our starters and then the main course came less than a minuite later it was cold and overcooked, the table we were at was very wobbley and the staff difficult to find. the rooms are to a good standard and very clean. housekeeping are very good and the laundry service extremly quick. "

  • Top Tip:

"We went on the Dundara day cruise leaving from the ibera hotel. a long day but deff worth it. the vews along the nile are lovely. the wraps, silver and T shirts sold on this cruise are a very good price. and not hassle or haggleing needed. "

  • Linda from London reviewed the Jolie Ville Luxor Island Resort Hotel

  • "Generally the hotel trades on its excellent location. However, the standard of English of the desk staff is poorer than I would expect of a five star hotel. It has some very good facilities for kids but does little to communicate them and tends to change the times of the kids club without warning. Furthermore the mosquitos are lethal and the anti mosquito coils they provide almost useless. Bring some really good repellant. If you have to buy some do it in town much cheaper. Breakfast is good and the other food adequate again not up to five star standard. However, the food in Egypt generally is pretty poor so by comparison its not bad. However, we did have a lovely time at the hotel and it is very friendly and picturesque. "

  • Top Tip:

"A trip on the nile is very enjoyable. If your there in the hot months try to get out to the sites very early (the hotel breakfast starts at 5 which is very useful). We visited Karnak temple at 6:15 and had the whole place to ourselves - magical. Also book balloon tours direct with operators its much cheaper than the one in the hotel. We paid 750 Egyptian pounds for two with Sindbad as opposed to 1300 through the hotel company."

The rooms are looking a little tired but there are new owners so we will wait and see. The staff were excellent really helpful. We took dollars for tipping. Taxis were plentiful and so cheap. Free hotel boat into Luxor and free hotel bus."

  • David from Harrogate reviewed the Jolie Ville Luxor Island Resort Hotel

  • "The hotel does what it sets out to do very well, and provides in addition a "green haven" after a hot and dusty morning tomb-viewing. It is not a 5 star hotel, however. My only negative comment would be on the hotel's internet facility which, at GBP12 per hour (really!), is the most expensive I have encountered anywhere in the world. For that price we could, and did, take a taxi into town, enjoy a good meal, and use an interet cafe. The right price for hotel internet is zero, and this is becoming the norm elsewhere. The Swiss should do the same at the Movenpick."

  • "I could not recommend this hotel or its staff enough! Every member of staff went out of their way to be polite and kind and helpful. I travelled alone with my daughter and felt very comfortable in the hotel and the trips were organised well and again we felt comfortable and looked after. If I ever went to Egypt again (here's hoping) then I would only stay here!"

I suffered with toothache a few days into the holiday but the doctor on site was most helpful and went into town pharmacy for me for very little charge and he was most helpful in general."
