  • Kevin from Canjayar reviewed the Mar Y Golf Hotel

  • "We enjoyed our stay - have been here before and we would use it again - the hotel could be excellent but it is let down by the poor state of the toilets near the pool and near reception. We're talking blocked urinals in the gents, no bolts on cubicle doors, and (ugh!) smelly. Room toilet was fine. No kettle was available for us to make coffee, so we used a saucepan - not ideal ut it eventually boils the water. Staff were great, restaurant good. The restaurant is a bit of a free-for-all self service, but we don't mind this. Though busy, you can eat as much as you want for each meal!"

  • Top Tip:

"Food in the hotel is on trays, and if it isn't hot enough for you they now have a microwave near the bread.
For food - tapas at Toni's (opposite the tobacco store) is free with a long (alcoholic) drink and is excellent for lunches. For an evening meal - the India Gate is superb. Excellent meal for two cost 32€ including a drink each. Both of these are on Playa Serena, which runs parallel with the beach with all the other bars and shops. Both just a few minutes walk from the hotel."

  • Alison from Ely reviewed the Mar Y Golf Hotel

  • "A large aparthotel ,mainly frequented by Spaniards. Apartment we had was a clean and well appointed but tatty as was the building in general. Staff were helpful and courteous. Nice swimming pool but very busy so we went to the beach about half a mile away which was very quiet"

  • Top Tip:

"Lovely quiet beach nearby but no amenities at all so take a coldbox"

  • Kevin from Worcester reviewed the Mar Y Golf Hotel

  • "For the price paid the hotel was OK. Although we were put into the older part of the building that is /should be due for refurbishment. The beach, bars and restaurants were all a good 1/2 mile walk and alyjough flat probably a bit to far for older people"

  • Top Tip:

"Worthwhile getting ataxi to a restaurant called Flamingos for large appetites and a great paella"

  • Kimberley from Retford reviewed the Mar Y Golf Hotel

  • "On arrival reception had no record of my booking anywhere on their system, we were promised a room because we had the print off voucher as proof of booking but we had to amuse ourselves for a good few hours until one became available for us, not sure how this happened but it was not the good start to our holiday we had hoped for. Hotel staff were on the whole friendly and helpful. No night life as such at this resort for younger people, nightclubs etc. Many Spanish families seem to holiday there. Needs to be made clear that when checking in you need to go to the BellaVista hotel reception, as the the two hotels are actually one (with Mar Y Golf). Generally though a pleasant stay, comfortable, basic accommodation which suited our needs. Very pretty scenic area and weather very good (we went june 9th - 16th)."

  • alan from ipswich reviewed the Mar Y Golf Hotel

  • "Typical cheap spanish apartmet hotel, blocked drains, heating didn't work (we did need it as it was unseasonally cold). Bar never seemed to be open. Food wasn't too bad very spainish"

  • Top Tip:

"Caribean breezer bar seemed to be the only place doing any business at all although there were many of them. The resort is one that seems to be very much undiscovered by the british appearing to be much more a destination for the spanish and as such it dosn't get busy untill much further into the year - we went beginning of June. The reason for this may be the wind which was strong all week. Beach is big and clean but water was very cold and most of the beach is a fine shingle that looks like sand on the photos. There was quite a strong tidal flow and it sloped very steeply."

  • Aisling from Dublin-4 reviewed the Mar Y Golf Hotel

  • "This was basic accommodation, cutlery and delph could do with an upgrade, but you get what you pay for. Near the beach and a good selection of restaurants if you like pizza. On a good note i love the idea that the children (very small)playground was right beside the pool area so you can keep an eye on them, our weather was'nt brilliant so it was great that they also had an indoor pool, staff friendly but only one of them had good english as this is mainly a spanish resort.M25 bar had a good selection of food with half chicken and chips 7euro and they do a 2litre bottle of lemonade for children for 2euro which was great as its always the kids that you spend all your money on, on hols!"

  • Top Tip:

"most convienent way to reach resort is taxi to the main bus station only 10euro( you can wait on local bus as we did on way to resort but u'll be waiting 40-50 mins and it does not drop you right at station,) then get alsa bus to roquetas for 2 euro adult 1euro child ask for hotel trinadad otherwise taxi is 50euro"

Resort was pleasant (used by Spanish families). and it was not completely dominated by Brit bars (although plenty available if that is your choice)"

  • Sandra from Dudley reviewed the Mar Y Golf Hotel

  • "Rooms were clean and comfortable, great value for money. Maid service brilliant, security staff friendly, reception and bar staff could have been more friendly and could have not ignored british holiday makers in favour of the spanish visitors. This said would go there again."

  • Top Tip:

"Best restaurants: Oasis, Woodys, Europa, El bistro.
Best lunchtime snack/tappas bars: Marcs bar- opposite Bahia Serena, Flamingo, Oasis.
Best bars: Caribbean Breezer, Papes, Theos, Colissimo.
    Best for footie: M25."

  • John from Walton on naze reviewed the Mar Y Golf Hotel

  • "The apartment was good except our heating was broke on arrival and all we got given was an unreliable portable heater !!!. No English T.V. in room. The games room was shut (not good when you have a 7 year old and the weather is iffy). Indoor pool out of order half of the time. Breakfast in the hotel was a joke. Nothing for the English or the German we spoke to come to that. When we asked if the chef would cook us an egg he shouted a load of spanish at us waving his arms around angrily. (Did tell the management)
There were no leaflets for local areas/events in the reception. No entertainment whatsoever. This hotel is a NO GO for English. Very very disappointing"

  • Top Tip:

"XUAN is a local Chinese restaurant which was brilliant and very reasonable. Highly recommend."

  • Sarah from Ipswich reviewed the Mar Y Golf Hotel

  • "The appartments were great for the price large, very clean, no bugs!!. the decor was a little dated, but not shabby. Kitchen had every thing we needed; hob, microwave fridgefreezer and there was air con!!
Considering we went well out of season we still had use of two out door and one indoor pool. The important thing with these appartments is you need to check in at the Hotel Bellavista which fronts onto the appartments and is linked by corridors. This means you have use of the hotel facilites like the bar and restaurant, so check out their details too. Roquetas has a great beach and is spread out for quite some distance so from here so to explore, either hire a car or there is a little road train which will give you a tour. Its a purpose built resort and therefore not much in the way of traditional Spanish streets etc but if you've just come for the beach and restaurants then its fine. Everything was open in October which was great (except for Mondays which seemed to be the day off round there). Weather was fantastic for Mid October, 6 days by the pool or on the beach, mid to late 20's temp. I've since seen a program on TV stating that Costa Almeria is the driest Costa and is great for all year round weather - I can't disagree."

  • Top Tip:

"Tip 1. El Nido's is the best for seafood or Paella (book in advance for this) don't be deceived by its modest, beach front premises - it is food to die for! Spanish families eat long, lazy lunches and have family parties here. The atmosphere is great.
Tip 2 learn some Spanish!! Even if its just hello, thank you, how much etc - not everyone speaks English (and why should they). They appreciate the effort, I went there knowing none, picked up a bit, but will learn some more for next time!
Tip 3 Have a cocktail or dessert at The Coconut Bar, you won't be disappointed."

  • "apartments need to be re furbished this had been started a little as it had new curtains but the rest was very shabby. When we put the hob on i received an electric shock the fridge did not work the cutlery was rusty although both fridge and hob were dealt with the same day . On the whole though no complaints with the booking from you as every thing else was excellent but we would not return to the Mar E golf again the Neptuno apartments are far better and less noisier"

  • "Excellant value for money. Apartments clean, towels changed daily. Pool area lovely, quiet, lots of sunbeds. Didn't eat or drink in the hotel, the drinks seemed very expensive and there were very good bars and restaurants close to the apartments. Travel Republic very helpful, all of our requests were met and all our questions answered speedily."

  • "We thought the hotel laid on a bus to get us to the town and back but there was no bus or local bus so we were stranded at the resort as we weren't confident enough to hire a car. The hotel is mainly full of Spanish people, hardly any of the staff speak English therefore we didn't get any help in organising trips or days out.

The apartment itself was very nice we were pleased with it and we found a nice hotel close by with a good restaurant."
