  • David from Backwell reviewed the Classic Savoy Hotel

  • "Excellent service and a very pleasant atmosphere in the hotel. Would recommend it - but they have plans to demolish it and build a 6 star hotel, so not sure how much longer it will be there in its present form!
All the staff were courteous, friendly and willing to help. Due to its (possibly) imminent demolition it has not been maintained to quite the high standard one might expect, but what it is growing a little tired in by way of upkeep it makes up for in its classical charm.
All the resources of the new Royal Savoy are available to guests of the 'Classic' and the combined facilities provided an excellent range (5 swimming pools between them!)."

  • Top Tip:

"A very nice restaurant directly opposite the hotel called 'E pra picanha'. The service was fantastic and the food excellent, but the bill came to no more than other restaurants we visited. We found many of the restaurants quite disappointing in the quality of food and service offered, so this was a welcome exception."

  • Barry from Babworth reviewed the Classic Savoy Hotel

  • "The hotel has lots of character and is run by efficient, friendly & courteous staff. Certain areas of hotel and the bedrooms are a 'bit tired' and in need of updating however, everywhere is spotlessly clean and very comfortable. I understand that the hotel is due to be pulled down in the next year and a new one built which explains the reason for the 'tired' decor."

  • Fiona from Dormansland reviewed the Classic Savoy Hotel

  • "we were very disappointed with the quality of the hotel especially since it is advertised as 5 star, it is no longer that standard. it is very dated in decor and quality of facilities. it is made more apparent when we could use the 5 star facilities of the new Savoy - the two do not compare. the advert for the hotel was very misleading in our opinion and we would not have stayed there if we knew. 5 star is a high quality not a faded standard."

  • Top Tip:

"Tokos is a very good restaurant, it is small and owned by the chef who greets you and takes time to show you the fish and explain the menu - it is a nice ambience and the food is excellent quality. it is a pricey night but worth it for that special occassion. `otherwise Marisqueira and frango da Guiia are both very good fish and meat restaurants, all walking distance of hotel"

  • P from harrowgate reviewed the Classic Savoy Hotel

  • "In its day this was a great hotel. It's now tired and in need of a complete overhaul. This is not 5* quality. That said, it is linked to the Royal Savoy (true 5*) and you benefit from their fantastic facilities - great cocktail bar, great pools, gym, sauna etc. We had a really good holiday but this was more down to the helpful friendly staff that the hotel itself which was a real disappointment."

  • Robert from Dorchester reviewed the Classic Savoy Hotel

  • "The Classic Savoy is a traditional hotel with spacious rooms, excellent service, indoor and outdoor swmming pools and an atmosphere of luxury. It has beautiful gardens and a connection to the shoreline via its modern sister hotel, the Royal Savoy. The pools and bars of the Royal are also available to guests of the Classic Savoy."

  • Top Tip:

"The Casal de Penha restaurant near the hotel (take lift to the gardens to access road at the back of the hotel) is good and reasoably priced.

Nearby gardens in Quinta Vigia and Santa Caterina park are beautiful. Latter has a snack bar and view of the port."

  • Malcolm from Solihull reviewed the Classic Savoy Hotel

  • "The Savoy is a very pleasant 'old fashioned' hotel. It doesn't have a lot in the way of gardens, but does have access to the Royal Savoy's seafront facilities. February seems to be low season, so the hotel was not crowded. The downside was that there were not many eating options. The outside pools were a bit cold (even the child pool), but the inside pool was warm (going on hot). The staff were very friendly and helpful."

  • Top Tip:

"Eating in at the hotel can be expensive and the buffet meals in the main restaurant can be a bit over the top to have every night. So I suggest going B&B rather than half board and making the most of the large number of good value local restaurants. The hotel has a voucher scheme that appears to offer 10% off food and drink, but in practice it is very difficult to meet all the terms and conditions -- e.g. we lost out because we did not quite spend the extra 10% and so they did not credit any of it. So don't be tempted by the vouchers unless you are sure you won't prefer eating out."

  • C from bordon reviewed the Classic Savoy Hotel

  • "The seven day b&b visit to the Savoy Classic hotel was a very pleasant experience, although it is situated about 3/4 of a mile from the town centre which was down a long hill and a 5-euro Mercedes taxi ride away

The room sizes were most generous and the public spaces luxurious and extensive, including grand rooms, several dining rooms and even a library, with very attractive gardens surrounding the hotel and an excellent heated pool

Above all the lifts were miraculously efficient and the very numerous staff were extremely polite and helpful. We were provided, free of charge, with a wheelchair throughout and an entertaining celebration dinner; the included buffet breakfast was superb. Hotel drinks and meals were good but expensive while there were plenty of cafes and a few shops together with hole-in-the-wall banking locally

There have been rumours about redevelopment, which would be a shame, so get it while the going is good"

  • Top Tip:

"We would like to recommend the cake shop/cofee shop opposite the hotel for snacks at reasonable prices, and go left, left and left again (about 200yds in all) to the '...Mara' or 'Mara...' restaurant for a good but still reasonable dinner in the evening"

  • Adam from London reviewed the Classic Savoy Hotel

  • "We had booked a double room, but were given a twin room, so had to move the beds together (although the bed was made up as a double for the rest of the stay).

On the last two days there was lot of banging after around 9am in the morning - maintenance, I guess.

The jacuzzis were both cold and seemingly out of order.

Aside from this, the hotel, and service, was absolutely excellent and probably the best I have experienced in Europe. I would perhaps try the Royal Savoy next time, as the Classic is probably showing it's age slightly (see above)."

  • John from Peacehaven reviewed the Classic Savoy Hotel

  • "Loved the hotel - comfortable and with good facilities. Really enjoyed the great buffet breakfast in pleasant dining room. Staff very helpful. Room originally allocated was north facing and rather dark but request for upgrade willingly granted. Bed rather firm for our liking. Would definitely go back but understand that site being redeveloped some time in 2008 - shame! It's ripe for a bit of smartening up but not pulling down!"

  • Top Tip:

"Enjoyed inexpensive evening meals in restaurants tucked away in back streets, particularly in Old Town - for example, 'Restaurante e Esplanada Arco Velho' just a few meters from the cable car base station. Exotic cut flowers (carefully boxed up by florist) make nice present to bring home. Watch out for cut price excursion offers made to entice you to spend hours with holiday investment scheme reps persuading you to part with several £K."
