Why choose Florence for a Short Break?

Because this is Italy’s finest and most historic city, almost untouched by modern life. And it is place where love, art and food are celebrated with a passion.

With 15th century architecture, Gothic cathedrals and masterpieces by artistes such as Michealangelo, this is Italian history and culture writ large. All of it is walkable and a good place to start is at either the Piazza della Signoria or the Piazza del Duomo where you can see the octagonal Baptistery, the Campanile (Bell Tower) and the Cathedral of St. Maria del Fiore. You can carry on walking through ancient squares dotted with museums, monuments and sculptures before ending up at the Uffizi gallery, probably the most important art gallery and museum in the world. It has masterpieces of Italian painting from every age including Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian and Caravaggio plus art by Dürer, Rubens, and Rembrandt.

Or you can simply walk down narrow medieval streets, shop for antiques and designer clothes, sip coffee in a traditional square and dine in some of the most romantic restaurants in the world. It is an inspiring, charming city of Renaissance and Romanesque splendour. And one, where at times the incredible surroundings will make you feel like you are in a fabulous movie or that you have stepped back in time. Enjoy.

Florence has fantastic shopping with superb leather goods, art, antiques and jewellery. There are open air markets selling food, clothing, and antiques. The most famous is around Piazza San Lorenzo and Via Porta Rossa. Mercato Centrale is great for food shopping.

Florence is the capital of Tuscany and is at the heart of beautiful countryside famed for its traditions and cuisine. You will eat very well. The local cuisine and regional produce is world famous. Country cooking uses seasonal produce and traditional dishes include Pappardelle alla lepre (Flat wide tagliatelle with rich hare sauce); Ribollita (Hearty soup with beans, black cabbage, and other vegetables, thickened with bread); Bistecca alla fiorentina (Thick T-bone steak charred on the outside, pink inside, hefty slab of Chianina beef); Caciucco alla livornese (Piquant fish soup with garlic toast) all can be washed down with a call of the local Chianti or Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Carmignano.
