Rome will knock your socks off. It is the birth place of modern civilization and has huge historic landmarks everywhere. With the Colosseum, the Vatican City, statues and fountains, narrow cobbled winding streets, wonderful piazzas, and medieval and baroque buildings, Rome has got it all. And then some. Within the walls of these magnificent buildings are some of the world's most celebrated paintings including pieces by Renaissance masters Leonardo, Raphael, Caraveggio, and Michelangelo. Rome is spectacularly, jaw droppingly beautiful. In short, prepare to be amazed.
Its history stretches back 2,000 years. And in November 2007, archaeologists discovered the cave where, they believe, Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome were raised. Romulus became the first King of Rome in 753BC. Not bad for a boy, apparently brought up by a she-wolf.
Modern Rome is bang up to date and probably the coolest city in Italy. For serious retail therapy and designer fashion visit Rome's three main fashion streets Via Condotti, Via Borgognona and Via Frattina which all run parallel to each other.
For fabulous food – day and night - and great nightlife, visit the market, cafes and bars of Piazza Campo dei Fiori, and Piazza Navona for street artistes, restaurants and bars. And check out Trastevere for nightlife and clubs.

Eating out in Rome
Throw away any notions of restraint or calories. You may never get here again, try everything. Eat Italian style. Long lazy lunches are popular with many small courses and possibly a siesta afterwards. Or if you are in tour mode, stop off at Piazza de Campo dei Fiori and make a picnic from the lush fruit and vegetables sold at the market or grab some anti pasti or a slice of pizza from the take-out stands and delis. And make some time to try the local wines, coffees and regional produce. It’s all about the flavour.
