To declare your love in the most romantic city in the world?
To flirt outrageously at the masked Carnivale?
To lie back on a gondola and sing the cornetto song?
Or because you've never had a Bellini at Harry's Bar?
Venice is simply the most romantic city in the world. 360 degrees picture perfect. Every view is heavenly and reflected in the city's labyrinth of canals. With grand hotels, baroque architecture, pavement cafes, medieval streets, and pastel coloured houses, it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Many films have been made here including, unsurprisingly Casanova (local hero), James Bond and the Talented Mr Ripley.
Home to some of the finest art of the first half of the 20th century, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is on show at her former home, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, on the Grand Canal in Venice. For medieval art enthusiasts, check out the Gallerie Academia.
One of the best things you can do in Venice is just to wander down the narrow streets of traditional houses and pretty bridges. Starting off from St Mark's Square, go west towards the Dorsoduro and Accademia areas or the Castello district to the east. Stop off at the legendary local landmark, Harry's Bar. On Calle Vallaresso which is on the front and just down from St Mark's Square. The Bellini cocktail (champagne and peach juice) was created here and has been sipped elegantly here by movie stars and visitors ever since.
Nightlife here generally is fairly quiet; with drinks followed by dinner in your hotel or one of the local restaurants. The locals often drink at a bacaro, which serves only wine and tapas-like snacks, cichètti. There are a handful of bars in the Campo Santa Margherita area. And the new kid on Venice's block is a late cocktail bar with reasonably priced snacks and meals, Orange. A few music bars and late night eateries can be found on Fondamenta Misericordia in Cannaregio. Or if you really need your nightly dose of disco, head off to the bar and late-night discos on the Strand at the Lido.
