Why choose Lisbon for a Short Break?

Lisbon has over 20 centuries of history and is spread across seven hills. It's architecture stretches across time from medieval to Art Deco and is characterised by low rise ochre and pastel houses and church towers and domes. One of the oldest parts is Alfama which was left largely untouched by the earthquake of 1755, and the old quarters of Castelo and Mouraria which lie next to the hill on which the impressive St. George's Castle sits. Getting around Lisbon is easy thanks to the efficient tram service, friendly people and lots of maps. There are so many different quarter to the city, but Barrio Altio and Chiado are two of the key ones. Barrio Altio is full of bohemian clubs, funky fashion, shops and bars. Chiado is its elegant older sister with theatres, bookshops, café society, art nouveau jewellery shops and designer boutiques for Hermes and Cartier.

The beaches are popular all year round, with Lisbonites heading off to the beach every chance they get, even after work. The water here is not as warm as Southern Portugal so you probably won't be swimming outside of the summer months. The beaches run along the railway line linking Lisbon to Cascais. The most popular beaches are Carcavelos and Estroril. Golf is another passion, with no less than 19 superb courses in the area. The closest one to both the city and the airport is the municipal owned Belavista golf course.

The Palace of Sintra is about 15 miles away and is a UNESCO world heritage site. The palace is amazing and there is lush green scenery and a gorgeous historic and artistic old Town, described by Byron as "the most pleasing in Europe" with Roman remains, ancient manor houses, churches and picturesque villages.

Fado is a style of singing, bluesy and folksy, that is intrinsic to Portuguese culture. In Lisbon, it is always sung by a solo performer accompanied by two guitarists. The songs of love and loss are intense and emotional and date back to the 18th century. The best Fado restaurants are away from the main tourist areas. Senhor Vinho in the Lapa district is owned by one of Portugal's top Fado artistes, Maria da Fe and Clube de Fado or Parreirinha de Alfama in Alfama are also well respected. There's also a Fado museum.
