The cathedrals at the Plaza de la Virgen are a mix of Moorish, Gothic and Baroque styles from the 13th – 15th century; and you also look out for the Serranos bell tower. In the Seu and Xerea districts there are Roman artefacts, Arab ruins and modern churches and palaces. In the old Mercat district is the former silk market, the Gothic 15th century, La Lonja, which is now UNESCO listed. Visit the old quarter at night and enjoy dinner or drinks in a historical and romantic setting; and look out for the bats.
The modern architectural miracle that is the City of Arts and Sciences must be visited. It brings together four incredible buildings full of incredible things. They includes the Palau de les Arts (Opera House), L’Umbracle ( Botanical gardens), L'hemisferic (Imax, Planetarium and Laserium), Musee de Ciences Principe Felipe (Science Museum) and L’Oceanográfic (Aquarium and Marine life institute).
Shopping here is great fun, too. Designer shops plus the restored marketplace of Mercado de Colón which has cool cafes and trendy boutiques and the elegant El Corte Ingles department store are in the Colón and Marques de Dos Agues areas. The flea market is on Sundays next to the Estella football stadium and Plaza Redonda is the best place for local Valencia ceramics and souvenirs.
