Stayed at Esmeraldas HotelOctober 2006 - We've been going to tossa a long time so sorry here's our tips. 1. Beaches - there are three, the Platje Gran (just follow the river bed to the sea), Mar Menuda to the left of the main one (very popular with watersports enthusiasts, scuba, snorkel etc) and our favourite Cadolar, a lovely small bay beach which you'll only find if you walk down the main street in the old town (behind and parallel to the main beach) as far as you can go and up the slope with the rear wall of the castle on your left. safest in our opinion for swimming as well, especially kiddies. Eating and drinking: There are at least 300 places to eat and drink apart from hotels in this small town and here's our opinion on the best at the risk of outraging all the many other wonderful places we have also been. I'd better explain first that all directions involve going to the "dual carriageway" at the top of the town coming from Girona and following the riverbed downstream. That's how you do tossa. new town left of the river, old town right of the river, main beach at the end of the river logically enough following the main avenida costa brava and dual carriageway the "start" of the town though development now behind and away from the centre continues apace.
1. Very cheap and cheerful english food and drink served by spanish folk (you know, beans chips gracias) is Bar Elsa. Two streets over from the main avenida to the left of the river. Pedro and aurora are wonderful. Great for brekkie.
2. Best Tapas – La Luna up the steep steps inside the castle walls. This must actually be the best tapas in Catalunya and certainly the best original regional food. Manuesh (hope I’ve spelt that right), her husband and Oriole the waiter.
3. English snacks and drinks from English people. Our local is the King Edward. Next street right of the avenida on the right of the river almost to the beach. Gay, Verity and Duncan are great hosts, good cooking here and a smashing atmosphere who can also put you right about everything else in the town as our space is limited here.
4. Spanish snacks and drinks from English people (!). and of course good local advice agin if your Spanish isn’t too hot. Trish and Julie in Bar Europa two streets from the avenida to the right of the river.
5. Best mixed culture atmospheric bar – Don Juan on the main street in the old town. Say hello to Andres, Gloria and the others.
6. Best snack come meal depending on how hot you are – Bahi Ton Grill just past Don Juan on the old town main street before the little fisherman’s church. The best sardines in tossa. The best prawns in tossa (even than La Luna). We lunch there every day with Miguel and Peter.
7. Best English come universal feed in town for evening meal. Tom’s steakhouse down as far as you can go to the left of the river and turn left as if going to Mar Menuda. He’s in the cluster of restaurants along there towards the statue of Minerva. Utterly awesome steaks but beware the portions are big.
8. Best spanish come universal feed in town for evening meal. Las Fabrellas two streets over from the avenida to the left of the river but changing into one by the time you get there (sounds confusing but you’ll know what we mean when you see the town). Fantastic big feed. “Proper” paella etc. but again this is a meal folks. If you have the mussels as a starter you wont eat again for two days.
9. Silliest romantic waste of 25 euros in town (wife says its not a waste its beautiful!) is Vila Vela café at the top of the castle (almost) for Cava Sangria and slice of cake. Got to admit Cava is mindblowing and the view is the best in town .
10. Best new kid in town – they have at last done something with a beautiful building overlooking Cadolar bay after many years and opened a restaurant called Rocamar. The decor is stunning yet the food and drink is very reasonable. We think it may have something to do with EEC money as it is connected to the light house restoration but who cares? Lovely for your morning coffee and the one evening meal we tried was excellent.
