  • Take the supratour to Essouira, which you need to reserve at the bus station, next to the train station, the day before you want to go. This is such a beautiful beach and excellent markets etc however the bus journey does take 3 hours. If I went again I would book the bus to come back the following day and stay the night in Essaouira (there are loads of cheap hotels on the front of the beach which always have vacancies apparently). I would give Safi a miss unless you are a surfer, and you will need to find the beach as the train doesnt take you into the main part of the town. For those people who like to drink on holiday, the hotel is very pricey, however if you come out of the hotel, take a left then turn left up the road at the side of the hotel, walkt to the main road (this only takes 2 mins) and turn right, walk all the way up that road (past an excellent French restaurant called Le6 which serves alcohol, and has excellent service and food) and keep going, you pass the institute for tourism and have a number of hotels on the left hand side of the road, keep going up for about 10 / 15 mins walk until you get to a large roundabout. The train station should be on the left hand side of the road by now for reference (there are maps in the hotel to help you with this). Take a right and there are a series of little shops (they dont advertise that they are off licences) and the first one you come to is quite small, and the cheapest on the road, the proprieter is very nice. from Lezanne

  • Take time for excursions even just the Ourika Valley which is beautiful and the tour arranged by the Hotel, is very good with an excellent guide, again be brave and barter if you want something the entertainment and information you get is well worth a purchase or tip as you go along. Get past the traffic and walk, Jardin Majorelle a delight to visit and Menara Gardens a sunshine walk. Be brave, visit the Medina and the Souk, it is colourful and the game of bartering good fun. from ANITA

  • We drove out of Marrakech into the beautiful Atlas mountains and other small towns which gave a much needed refreshing outlook after the chaos of the Medina in Marrakech. Driving into the mountains I found people more friendly and genuine, and not that bothered if you bought anything from them or not. They truly enjoy finding out where you are from, and sometimes sharing a few jokes. I enjoyed negotiating a number of camels in exchange for my wife (once they found out she was Czech!). I’ve got a few camels for sale now if anyone needs one ;-) Marrakech is interesting. We only needed two full days to see what we wanted - souks, big square and some museums and architecture. Example of price haggling in a souk. Initially told pretty(ish) looking mirror was 750DH. After advising trader 'I'm not interested' he went to 250DH - I paused and thought - and then said once again, 'no I'm not interested'. He then went to 150 and tried to grab my hand to shake and complete the deal. I took my hand back and said once again 'no, I'm not interested', he then said - okay give me 120DH. I walked off. Be aware of what you are buying as the usual rules apply, ie – if it seems to good to be true, it probably is. I returned to London with nothing from the souks. Travel around Marrakech in Petite Taxi, they are everywhere – it’s helpful to know some French numbers to agree the fare. Driving in Morocco is for confident drivers only. from R

  • We negoiated prices with a taxi driver for various trips. His name was Mo Mo and we found him reliable and as far as we are concerned very fair in his prices and he does understand english also which is helpful. He drives what they call a Grand Taxi (Mercedes). Located outside the hotel entrance. In the town you can get a petite taxi (about the size of a Corsa) but we were not very impressed with them so was glad to get back to Mo Mo. The roads in the town are horrendous to cross as traffic just comes straight at you so beware. If you take the shuttle but from the Hotel it drops you off at avenue November which is about a 25 minute walk from the Main square (Jamelia) which is where most people head to. We caught the shuttle for a change one day was dropped off there after trhinking it would take us to the square so decided to pick up a petite taxi saying we wanted to go to the square. He took us very near the square and then tried to encourage us to go shopping in one of the souks which we did not want. We still had quite a walk to the square so was not very happy!. Mo Mo arranged a table at a very typical morrocon restauarnt it was fantastic. It was 480dhs per person but that was for all food and mint tea but wine was extra. It was set in an old ryad and there is no way we would have found this restaurant on our own. We also went to the Kozy Bar our last night and that was also a lovely place to sit and eat an evening meal on the roof terrace. Look forward to going back to a different part of Morrocco. from Paula
