Martin from Bournemouth reviewed the Alcazar Hotel
Check-in Date: 12/Jun/2010

Excellent value for a 3 star hotel and they are still making improvements there. Very clean. Buffet service in restaurant - we were on half board and the food was fine. Only a short walk to the sandy beach which goes on for miles. There is a derelict hotel next door which was a bit off-putting when we arrived but we enjoyed the holiday so much that we didn't notice it much after that! This is the quiter side of the Algarve and we loved it!

Top Tip Tavira is worth a visit. Also another beautiful beach at Manta Rota. Vila Real de San Antonio is good for shopping and you can catch the ferry across to Spain

Good hotel on the whole and it is currently being improved. The food could be improved though. breakfasts good but juices taste artificial. Evening meal needs more choice. Main course choice have too much fish and vegetables very poor. Only a choice of 2 desserts and the torte was very similar each night. A whip or jelly is very unimaginative. Come on you chefs you can do better!
This has the making s ao a very good hotel if food improves.
The service was excellent and staff on reception went out of their way to help.
The bedding a bit old but rooms kept very clean.

The hotel is set back away from the main tourist areas of Monte Gordo and so your stay is garenteed to be a quiet one. The rooms are spacious are well kept. Staff are friendly and accomodating although we didn't really need to ask for help with anything as any information you require is nicely presented in the welcome pack in the room. There is no mad rush for sun loungers by the pool as it is closed from 7pm to 9am. Breakfast selection was very good and the food was nice, it did however get repetitive as the food served was exactly the same every day.

Top Tip Pizzeria Restaurante Honorato's is a must. Located close to the hotel, it will be one of the first restaurants you pass as you head towards the main pedestrianised area. They serve a good selection of pasta and steaks, along with numerous pizzas and other accompanyments. We tried a selection from their menu, the steak was cooked to perfection, the lasagne was creamy and very morish and their Monte Gordo Special Pizza was fantastic. Portion size is ample and their prices were very good.

If you are looking for the quietest part of the vast beach at Monte Gordo then turn left out of the hotel's main entrance, follow the road until you reach the entrance to the neighbouring camp site, cross the road and walk through the picnic area. Beyond is the beach, in the distance to your right you will see the majority of the other people on the beach (all crowded on and around sun loungers), to your left is golden sands and a pleasant walk all the way to the Spanish boarder.

We had a fantastic time. Our junior suite was spacious and clean and we can pay it no greater compliment than to say it felt like home to us during our stay. The hotel staff were pleasant and helpful, the restaurant food was very good and the swimming pool area was a great place to soak up the sun. There could have been more waiters at breakfast and dinner to clear away plates, re-lay tables etc., but those that there were worked extremely hard and did a good job.

We would certainly visit the hotel again and are already thinking about next year's holiday in Monte Gordo.

Top Tip There were two great two great places to get a cup of coffee and a pastry in Monte Gordo (and no doubt many more), both within a couple of hundred yards of the hotel, one called La Pasteleria (red and white shop frontage) and the other Nicola Milano 2000. Also, we came across a snack bar in Vila Real de Santa Antonio (which is a mile or so from Monte Gordo, right down on the border with Spain) called Cafe Latte, which did great snacks, cakes, coffees, beers etc. at incredibly reasonable prices. Each of them is highly recommended.

The hotel was fine and our room was big and spacious. The main problem was lack of staff, particularly cleaning. I do not think our bath was cleaned for the entire week, only towels were changed and beds quickly covered up. The same goes for the outside area, the pool was dirty and I saw no one do any cleaning around the pool area.

Top Tip Beach is beautiful, and excellent for long walks along.

hotel very clean we stayed bed and breakfast for 24 days did'nt get fedup at all, staff were pleasant and cleaners very good .One thing please note that some rooms do not have balconys so if you smoke this makes things difficult.Rooms are large enough even for a long stay.No complaints about this hotel at all. This the third time us and our friends have booked through Travel Republic no complaints there either.

Top Tip Beach about five minutes walk, great woodland walks very flat country side ideal for the not so able, bars and a vast amount of cafes very close by,he cheapest place we found was a take a way that did spit roast whole chicken and chips for six euros. With Spain just two miles away plus a short ferry ride for one euro fifty if its cheeper booze and tobacco your after a plus ayamonte(spain) has a nice feel to it and well worth the trip. There is a train a 15min walk away that takes you to Faro and beyond.

Having stayed at the Alcazar last year on our honeymoon we decided to return for our 1st Anniversery and again we were not dissappointed. Everything that we needed was within 5minutes walking distance ie beach, pool, shops, restaurant, casino etc. The staff at the hotel were very helpful and although we did not have dinner in the main restaurant the food served at the pool bar was excellent and good value for money.
Roll on next year we will be back. Also thank you for the lovely car on our pick up to the hotel it made a lovely start to our holiday.

Top Tip If you head for the square adjacent to the casino you will find an array of restaurants from cheap to expensive. Also for the ladies a great we shoe shop where i got 4 prs of sandals for 20 euros. We can also recommend the Taj Mahal Indian the food was super.

Staff very helpful and pleasant. Rooms large with plenty of storage space. Soundproofing not brilliant and some younger guests rather noisy but very good value for the price paid.

Top Tip Local trains very useful and reliable. Restaurants generally seemed very good value.

The friendliness and courtesy of the staff was exceptionally good, and because of that, I gave it an above average grade. Otherwise I would possibly have said "average".

Our trip this time was for our honeymoon and we were not dissappointed. The hotel was excellent and the staff could not have been more helpful.
Only had breakfast in the hotel but plenty of choices for eating out and none of them were very costly.

Top Tip If you like walking this is the beach to go to as there is miles and miles of it and really clean. I would recommend it to anyone but want to keep it to ourselves as too many people would spoil it. (just kidding). Also the staff at Travel republic were very helpful and got us what we wanted. Thank again for a wonderful honeymoon

Hotel was as expected for 3star rating, room and service very good.
The breakfast was another matter. Very limited hot food, fruit juice disgusting and apart from the breadrolls, nothing worth eating!
Resort very run down but beach and restaurants very good.

The Alcazar was an excellent hotel, the facilities were clean and bright - the food selection for the evening meal was excellent, not quite as extensive for breakfast, but totally adequate. All together an excellent hotel and to be recommended to those wishing to have a quiet comfortable holiday break.

Top Tip The local restaurants were good, beautiful beaches stretching for miles and the local shops and people friendly and welcoming. A quiet place that won't remain quiet once news gets out
