Flying to Heraklion (Crete)
Heraklion International Airport is only 5 km east of the city that has been accurately described as ‘one of the Mediterranean’s most attractive capitals’. As Crete’s largest city, Heraklion is the place for great shopping and cultural activities. Once a part of the Venetian’s extensive empire, Heraklion still retains several remains of its past. For a relaxing taste of the best of Heraklion, take a stroll down to the ‘Old Harbour’ and sip a coffee on the quayside below the illuminated walls of the Venetian fortress, looking, for all the world, like an amazing film set. An excursion from Heraklion by coach to the partly restored ruins of the great Palace of Knossos along the coast should be a must for anyone remotely interested in Crete’s amazing past, for it was at Knossos that legendary King Minos held court, and where his Labyrinth held the Minotaur – half man, half bull – that was eventually killed by the Athenian, Theseus.
But Crete is much more than history, and Heraklion is perfect for reaching the island’s many resorts, such as Agia Pelagia some 16 km west, where wonderful sands and a beach protected from the winds mean ideal swimming conditions for the whole family.
