Good hotel, although lacking a little bit of 'soul'.
Its right on the edge of town but its a small town and there is regular free shuttle bus. The photo it advertises itself with is very clever and looks like you are right by the side of the lake, you are not but quite a way away, but with great views down to it.
Good rooms, make sure you have one overlooking the lake !

Top Tip:
The restaurant Las Dunas is very good and a nice relaxed friendly atmosphere, plus also right on the lake-side, and strangely is part of the same group that own the El Calafate, however the hotel dont advertise it.
Another excellent retaurant is El Cucharon, great atmosphere and food.
Get a hire car in El Calafate, its brilliant to have the freedom and the driving is easy withlittle traffic. You can go at your own pace at the glaciers rather than being with a tour.
At the galcier on land you get very close from the very good walkways, the boat trips are OK but you get no closer and it costs lots, dont get sold by the hype.
Also get to Lago Roca and climb Cerro Cristal, amazinf views of the mountains. lakes and the Perito Morino glacier !
