It must be remembered that this is a 'Pension' and not an 'Hotel', so the accommodation is simple and basic. Howerver it is scrupulously clean, well maintained and comfortable. There is a lift, which is a real plus in a small establishment. The owner (Camilla) speaks excellent English, although the rest of the team are a bit limited in this. The level of friendly, cheerful, helpful service from everyone faultless. However the real star performance, comes from the food - this is seriously good.Preparation is shared between Camilla and an evening cook, and the range and quality of the food is amazing for a small pension-based restuarant. We ate in every night over two weeks and only repeated twice - out of choice.
Having lauded the positives of the accommodation, there is a caveat to be added. Sal is a place for either a beach holiday, or a wind surfing/kite surfing holiday, there is little in the way of other attractions - a tour of the island sights takes four hours max. However the beaches are long,clean and sandy, and there is plenty of room to laze uncrowded.
There are inevitably many people trying to earn from the tourists and consequently some perster factor, yet a polite 'No thankyou' will always be respected.
We spent two weeks there, and rate it among our best holidays.

“ It is a friendly hotel, run by the owner, in a motherly way. She is highly attentive to the guests and welcoming, without being intrusive. The remaining staff are sweet and friendly. There is not much choice for breakfast, if I have to be critical. That could be better!

Porta do Vento is a great small hotel run by a very friendly lady. We were greeted by the owner when we arrived at 2.30 in the morning. Breakfast was plenty and of good quality. The hotel is about 5 minutes' walk from the beach.
The owner and staff were always very polite. We had dinner there only once as we wanted to try some of the local restaurants, the food was great and service impeccable. The room was cleaned every day with sheets changed after 3 days. The interior of the room was modern. There was no air condition, but there was no need for this when in March.
“ Top Tip: It is right next to a supermarket that had just opened, where cards are accepted (did not try as had cash).
