I have just returned home after spending a week in Santa Maria which is, quite simply, a dump - a cross between a shanty town and a building site. The landscape of the island of Sal resembles the surface of the moon. Road surfaces are appalling and pavements and street lighting are almost non-existant. The localsa are generally slightly surly and slow. There are a few street hustlers but they are easy to ignore - unlike the flies. Very little English is spoken. Prices are high (petrol is 1.36euros/litre) and often extortionate - cheapest car hire is 50 euros for a Fiat Panda for a day. Don't take travellers cheques; banks charge 20% commission to convert them to escudos and 40% to convert them to euros. Don't buy a visa in the Uk for £72. Buy one at Sal airport for 25 euros. There is usually no queue and once you have your visa you don't have to join the long, slow queue at passport control. Food is sub-standard and if you don't like seafood or pasta you will really struggle. Nightlife is a joke.

Food was not to the quality expected apart from New Year's Eve when they laid on an excellent spread.
Also had problems with availability of hot water - reported problem 2 - 3 times - gave up in the end. Only had hot water for one evening and one morning - rest of time was tepid.
“ Top Tip: Local beach was excellent - went on for miles - not much choice of snack bars, etc., though.

“ No fuss, no problems, no complaints. Right on the magnificent beach with plenty of sunbeds, big swimming pool, adequate but a little dated bungalow room, buffet-style restaurant was fine without being exceptional, very few English, mainly Italian and French, good fun and good value.
“ Top Tip: Move outside to eat rather than the bustle of the restaurant
