La Union Hotel in Cienfuegos, Cuba was a really beautiful hotel with friendly, helpful staff and good facilities. The swimming pool was heavenly with sun loungers and bar. There was also a lovely courtyard with loads of plants. A Cuban band played in the restaurant each evening which was great. We were just sorry for them that other diners didn't seem to take much notice of them, particularly when they came round selling their CD (which we bought) or collecting tips. In fact one table had their heads in a lap top the whole time. Where else can you go to listen to professional musicians for the equivalant of a few pesos?
“ Top Tip: On our first night a local "jack the lad" got into conversation with us when we came out of the hotel in the evening and said he knew of a really good restaurant. This is commonplace in Cuba for locals to make a few pesos, but this time we went along with it and I'm glad we did. he took us to a restaurant which we would never have found ourselves - we had to go through grannies sitting room into a courtyard set out as a proper restaurant. It was really good food and loads of it. What was nice was that it was also used by locals and a big extended family came in, which reminded me of when we all go out with my sister, brother and their chilldren for birthdays. We noticed the same guy was outside the hotel every night looking for tourists. he was good natured though and greeted us every time we saw him. Funnily enough we realised we hadn't actually given him any money in the end!

“ The hotel itself was very charming and full of character. Having the pool to cool down in the afternoon was great. The food however was pretty disappointing, both breakfast and dinner. You're best bet would be to look out some local paladares where the quality will be much better.
“ Top Tip: The day trip to el nicho organised by Cubatur was worth doing. Would definitely recommend it.

“ Hotel was excellent, good pool, friendly staff;WE ate out tewice breakfast was 4/10 , dinner about the same, but you don't go to Cuba for the food
“ Top Tip: we ate out twice and in hotel once. Hotel definitely third. Palacio del Valle was ok, Club Cienfuegos a little better - maybe 5/10
