We have been to Cuba many times before and you have to make alowances for Cuban Hotels. A Cuban run 4 - 5 star hotel is probably equivaent to a UK 2 - 3 star. Cuba is an amazing place - but still relatively poor - and bear in mind that the average cuban earns $20 a month - so a $1 tip can a long way to getting what you need.

We had booked the Brisas as we had seen it befoe on provious trips to Trinida and Playa Ancon. As we were on a honeymoom trip around Cuba we booked a Junior Suite, #7013. The room was huge with a seperate sitting area. We had asked for a sea view - but this was not possible with a suite. The room was very clean, the bed was enormous and very comfy, the aircon wos relatively new and worked well and all fittings and fixtures worked. This is very rare in Cuban hotels. I have read poor reportts on this hotel on otehr websites - I can only assume they were for standard rooms - so if you can afford it - go for a junior suite. We went out of high season, end of Septmber, so the hotel was at about 20% capacity so the two extra restaurants were not open. The food generally was very good compared to usual Cuban Hotels. The beach is stunning and the water clear blue. We went sailing on the hotels' catamaran. Paid $10 each for a coral reef snorkel - well worth it.

Top Tip: We went sailing on the hotels' catamaran. Paid $10 each for a coral reef snorkel - well worth it. We went horse riding in Escambray moutains - about $20 each for 5 hours. Make sure you wear long tousers and long sleeve shirts - lots of spikey bushes to avoid. Went for swim in waterfall halfway though trek

Make allowances for Cubans low pay - a $1 tip goes a long way

The accomodation was lovely - right on the beach and with a very large swimming pool. Light and bright with friendly staff. We enjoyed the all inclusive nature of the resort - especially as cocktails were included. It has to be said that the food was definately below average. It's a real pity because it's a lovely place and if the food had been good it would have deserved a much higher rating. Also, I believe that it was low season as the hotel appeared to be quite empty. Due to this there was no entertainment, which was a bit of a shame as this had been promised in the hotels marketing material.

Top Tip: Request a sea view room - ours was lovely. Also, bring along cards and board games etc - the evenings were a little dull without entertainment and with limited entertainment resources.
