I was quite amazed, as usual, having read other people's reviews before going. Sadly I think some people either live to moan or quite honestly should stay at home. There was a slight delay on check in at arrival, but by giving them an hour - I got the 'nice' room I requested. Not in the new block, but with adequate facilities. Yes, the decor is dated but there was everything you need - except perhaps, tea & coffee making facilities in the room, but the restaurant /reception is not far if you fancy a cup of something.
The food is 'different', but isn't that part of foreign travel. There was always something to eat, and try new things - you never know - you may just like them! It does make me cross when people complain about the food - just because it may not be to your taste - it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. For example - breakfast always included mashed mango and plaintain to cater for local/carribean guests.... but there were also 40 other dishes if you don't like that. Cereals, fruit, juices, plus all the cooked stuff & crepes etc... masses of choice.
Also, in the evenings the 2 A la carte restaurants were included in the AI package - and they were excellent if you wanted something cooked fresh to order.
There was endless burgers/hotdogs/salad/snacks at the pool restaurant - from 11am to 6pm, all constantly being made fresh.
Yes, the drinks are local but if you want imported - you've got to pay for it. It was around £3 to £4 for imported stuff - so I don't think it's that expensive - if you feel the need.
The beach is fabulous and you can walk round the bays and back, which will take around 2 hours - or you can go by speed boat water taxi from Pelicano watersports (turn left from beach) or from various others as you walk to the right.
The weather was a bit hit & miss - bit that's noones fault - however it can be very humid.
The only downside, was the lack of reef/snorkeling from the beach. Now I read about snorkeling & diving in this area, but it isn't up to much at all - IF you are used to reefs such as red sea, maldives, Australia etc - it is NOT a snorkel/dive base. Yes, you can snorkel - but the point is you won't see anything of much interest. I even did the Saona Island & Catalina Island boat trips for 'reef access' - not at all worth it for snorkelling. But, there are fantastic white sandy coconut tree lined beaches to chill on - and that's a good way to spend the days too. I have to say that as an avid snorkeller I was disappointed - but hey, perhaps I've just been spoiled by my regular jaunts to Shark El Sheikh.... where it's like entering an aquariaum from most beaches.
The service was excellent, they take note of any comments you make & contact you to advise of any feedback from the questionnaires they give you. Be honest - it's appreciated. But be fair - above all - if you want things as they are at home - stay there.

Mixed bag. Nice hotel, great location. However had to request to be moved from 1 room as its conditions were v poor for a 4 star, shower not working, wires hanging out of walls, lights etc not working. Not sure whether we were just unlucky but it seemed 1 of the 5 blocks of rooms still needed to be refurbished. However the room we moved to was great.
Its only main down point was the food, buffet was ok nothing special and as for the restuarant it was poor, even my 14yr old niece who eats like a horse left her main and we ended up back at the buffet.
“ Top Tip: Got to do the reef explorer. Great day out. And swimming with the dolphins was also a great experience.
