A great hotel at risk of dropping its standards.
The good...
This is a beautiful, atmospheric hotel, an incredible building right in the city centre and within walking distance of everything that's great about Avignon. The staff are very friendly and were helpful with all our requests for information about local buses, car hire and activities. Our standard twin room was a good size, although as a tall man (6' 3") the sloping roof wasn't exactly ideal! The roof terrace and pool were invaluable for catching the sun and cooling off after a day exploring beautiful Provence.
And the bad...
This is the second time I've visited the hotel, the first time being about 5 years ago, and it could do with a couple of updates. The air-con in our room was pretty ineffective at dealing with the August heat. We had it on all full night and still woke up sweating. The comfy beds were let down by cheap synthetic pillows that seemed to make it even hotter. More seriously, however, the roof terrace is in a bad state of repair: I trod on a paving stone which gave way underneath, and my foot slid into the hole that opened up, injuring my ankle in the process. The response from staff was unapologetic and casual and the problem was not resolved. Combined with the fact that there were no parasols on deck and the loungers were all falling apart and/or rusty, the terrace could start to become a real hazard for guests.
