Excellent

Excellent, value-for-money, clean and comfortable rooms in Crete's own version of Portmeirion - all rather quaint, if perhaps slightly dated. Having said that all rooms seem to have aircon, and even internet access (wifi in bars and public areas only, so take a cable). TV and fridge provided but no kettle.

Beautiful pool, bar and restaurant areas with spectacular views over the bay of Heraklion and the mountains. Restaurant good (some of the more unusual Cretan dishes on offer as well as wine from own vineyard) and reasonably priced although the menu is a little restricted.

The 'village' is a favourite of local Cretans for weddings and baptisms, so not so quiet at weekends, but a glimpse of the real Crete provided for free. There's also a weekly 'Greek night' in the 'village square', which is much less tacky than most such and seems to attract an unlikely number of locals on a night out.

Hotel could not be better placed for those who want to explore the island by car being set off the old National Road with easy access to the new (E75) - 11km to Heraklion, 75km to Rethimnon and Ag Nikolaios, and with Chania less than two hours away - to the main routes to the south coast via the Lassithi Plateau and Mieres - Matala 70km - and the Idi Mountains via Anogeia.

Top Tip: Nice beach and tavernas at Agia Pelagia (especially Kri Kri and Zorbas). Beautiful walks through the olive groves behind the archeological site at Tylissos. Don't miss out on the Nida Plateau.

Check-in date:

Restaurant in Arolithos served some fantastic food, the place is truly beautiful. About 15 euro's for a taxi from, or to Iraklio (Heraklion)

Top Tip: not easy to get anywhere from here unless you have a car, it is a few miles from Iraklio and daily taxi's would be about 15 euro's each way.

I thought the hotel was very nice but there were rather a lot of uneven stone steps between dining areas and accommodation buildings that elderly guests found very difficult to negotiate as there were insufficient hand rails.

Check-in date:

This was the second time we have been to Arolithos. We were very dissapopinted in the standard of service and the food served in the restaurant. In the evening a main course was served with 3 of the starters the 4th starter arrived with 2 more main courses and after 20 mins we had to ask for the second time for the 4th main. when it came it had hot chips and cold meat which should have been hot from the grill. The waiter was very dissinterested.
Lunch was an again an extremely expensive meal for what we had and again the food was at best average.
The rooms were clean with clean bedding etc.
The morning entertainment when the hotel was like a real village with people serving in the bar and shops all dressed in national costume was very good, interesting and informative.

However we cut short our visit and explained why to the reception who apologised and gave us 2 bottles of wine.
All in a very dissapointing experience

Top Tip: There are no alternatvie restaurants near by and a car would be a big advantage.
