MY WIFE AND I HAVE STAYED AT THE MARIA ROUSSE APARTMENTS BEFORE AND ENJOYED THE HOLIDAY/RESORT/HOTEL SO MUCH THAT WE DETERMINED TO VISIT AGAIN.
OUR SECOND VISIT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. THE VENUE IS RUN ON A SOUND LIST OF RULES THAT MAKES FOR A SAFE, HASSLE FREE BREAK WITH CARED FOR APARTMENTS AND BEAUTIFUL GROUNDS. THE HOTEL IS WELL PLACED FOR THE BUSY YOUNG END 'STRIP' AND FOR THE OLD TOWN RESTAURANTS. WE TRAVELLED LATE IN THE SEASON SO THE STRIP WAS QUIET BUT EVEN SO YOU WILL FIND THAT MOST TEENAGERS ARE GOING OUT WHEN YOUR HEADING HOME IF YOUR IN THE SENIOR AGE GROUP.
CRETE GENERALLY IS GEORGEOUS BUT PRICES ARE NOT CHEAP SO EXPECT TO HAVE A FEW MEALS IN OR AT LEAST AT THE CHEAPER EATERIES, OF WHICH THEIR ARE MANY. AT THE VILLAGE RESTAURANTS YOU WILL PAY £30 PLUS FOR STARTER, MAIN COURSE AND WINE FOR TWO.
AT THE HOTEL SECURITY IS TIGHT AND NOISY PATRONS ARE NOT WELCOME AT THIS OASIS OF CALM IN THE MIDDLE OF BUSTLING AND FUN MALIA. GO VISIT, IT'S JUST GREAT.
“ Top Tip: THEIR ARE STACKS OF TOP RESTAURANTS BUT GENERALLY THE OLD TOWN GIVES YOU THE BEST FOOD AND ATMOSPHERE . TRY 'PETROFINO' FABULOUS FOOD AND DESSERT GRAPES PICKED FROM THE VINES ABOVE YOUR HEAD BY THE CHARMING LADY HOST.

“ Nice clean hotel, room fair sized but just missed some character. George the owner was quite difficult to deal with at times and everything seemed to have a fine attached to it. €50 deposit pp and aircon €6 a night and wasnt even that good. Shower was absolutely tiny and could barely fit in it. Overall it wasnt a bad hotel but just didnt do anything to wow you, we spent majority of our time up in newcastle appartments and i must say that was better from what i saw but didnt really spend alot of time to try out maria rousse but from the little i saw wasnt amazed. Didnt seem that lively or loud everyone just seemed to chill by the pool or grass area which is quite nice if you like to have abit of peace and quiet. Malia itself is amazing so wherever you stay you should be fine!
“ Top Tip: Supermarket straight in front of front gate few meters up the road.

The hotel complex, including room, pool area and eating area was impeccably clean and wonderfully presented, and sadly, i feel lost on the majority of patrons staying there. The noise levels were monitored realistically with personal music allowed to be played until about midnight. After this no music was permitted to give other hotel users peace enough to sleep. There were murmurings from the nearby lively 'strip' of Malia but I felt this didn't impact too heavily on our slumber! and it must be noted that this was out of the owners' hands. As hosts, the proprietors were very accomodating and couldn't do enough to heighten their guests pleasure; nothing was too much.
Critically, the hotel doesn't allow guests to eat their own food or drink (including water) by the pool and there's an expectancy to purchase these from the pool bar. Prices aren't cheap generally in Malia but supermarkets offer cheaper goods than the pool bar. That said, the occasional time I did eat from the pool bar the food was excellent and drink more than acceptable. As a keen cook, I also found it frustrating with having only a two stoved cooker to prepare food with ,which consequently meant I ate a lot of salads! However, the fruit and veg in Crete was exceptional. Overall this trip reestablished my faith in a 'med' holiday and if I am Crete bound again I shall definitely consider the Maria Rousse appartments.
“ Top Tip: Malia is a good base to explore central and Eastern Crete. We hired a car for one day (30 euros) and explored the rugged mountains and the areas of Elounda and north of here. I never realised just how dramatic the scenery was in Crete; their highest mountain is almost double that of Ben Nevis!. I would say to any travellers there, drive into the mountains for some truly breathtaking photo opportunities and try and take in the history of the place.
