The Avenue Hotel is an excellent 3-star hotel in the historical centre of Amsterdam, with all well-known Amsterdam attractions within walking distance, yet only 30 minutes from Schiphol Airport. The hotel provides good-sized, comfortable rooms each with telephone, television. hairdryer, cable TV and pay-tv and internet access. The day starts with a delicious breakfast in the breakfast room.

You can eat as much as you like and each day of the week, you’re welcome in the cosy St. Jacobsstreet Café, located in the hotel, for a bite and a chat or a refreshing pint of Heineken.

Upon arrival we were told due to water damage 10 days previous we had been moved to a hotel more than 1 mile away.Due to my partners recent hip replacement surgery this was totally inappropiate.
After making our feelings known a room was allocated to us,we were then re-allocated the noisiest room in the hotel after the guest in front of us in the queue
stated they had requested a quiet room so they were given ours instead.
When I asked reception why we had not been notified of this problem to allow us to make alternative arrangements they had no answer.
Not the standard I expect!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check-in date:

The hotel was very well situated, near the railway station, the older part of town and most of the main attractions. The room was comfortable, if basic and the breakfast more than adequate. Staff were helpful and pleasant and the hotel was clean, lift worked, good shower. View was poor from our room although that did not affect us and the main criticism was the lack of tea making facilities which seem pretty standard in three star hotels these days.

Top Tip: The brown bars proliferate within walking distance and all provide a pleasant, convivial experience even though mainly populated by tourists. The London Bridge bar opposite the hotel provides a good starting point. We enjoyed a good steak at La Vida, an Argentinian restaurant in the Red Light District.

Check-in date:

I booked this hotel mainly because of its nearness to the rail station, which was only about a five minute walk away. I have to say that this is the worst hotel that I have ever stayed in. When we arrived at the hotel there was a very strong smell of hot food and clearly we had interrupted the receptionist's evening meal which was very visible from the front desk. The door to our room was wedged open with a bag of dirty laundry which must have been there a number of hours because we didn't check in until gone 6pm! Although the bed linen was clean and the bed was comfortable, the carpet hadn't been vacuumed, the bathroom had an underlying smell of a men's public toilet, although appeared to be visibly clean, and the towels had frayed edges. Whilst going down to breakfast in the lift one morning the lift door opened on one of the floors and we were greeted with a cleaner who proceeded to vacuum inside the lift with us in it whilst we all shuffled backwards! It's a pity she didn't make it up to our room because it still hadn't been vacuumed by the time we checked out. Luckily I had only chosen this hotel as a base for two nights' stay and not for a holiday because I certainly would have cut my stay short.
