The Nova Hotel is situated between the Dam Square and Spui. It is a pleasant hotel, located within five beautifully renovated 17th century buildings in the old heart of Amsterdam. The shopping areas are nearby and in front of the hotel you will find the Amsterdam Historical museum whilst the Anne Frank Museum is only 5 minutes away. There are also numerous excellent restaurants and cafes in the immediate surroundings. The guestrooms are all very well equipped with modern facilities and amenities.

We chose this hotel as we fancied a change from the Westcord Hotel (5 mins away), what a mistake! The Nova Hotel is rated as a 3 star which it clearly is not. On arrival we given Room 101. The room was up a very narrow staircase which was very difficult to climb especially with a case. The room smelt very dense, the windows could not open and there was urine in the toilet. We were only in this room for 5 minutes and we could hear loud footsteps where people were walking on a landing directly above our room. We had a word with reception and they changed our room to a garden room. This room was also sub-standard. The carpet was dirty, edges of the carpet were folding up to reveal holes between the floor and the skirtings, the pillows smelt of sweat, basically, it was very dinghy and depressing. The room was filled with old worn out furniture. A flat screen TV was advertised which didn't exist nor were there any English channels on the TV. In my opinion, I would class this hotel as the equivalent to a hostel and feel that this hotel needs to be either downgraded or totally refurbished.

Being just round the corner from Dam Square it could not be more central for all attractions. All the staff were most helpful, especially the two gents on reception who went out of their way to be of assistance.
Buffet breakfast was basic but quite adequate. Slept like a log on our 4 night visit.

Top Tip: Restaurant round the corner Humphries is a must.

The hotel is ideally placed for seeing all that Amsterdam has to offer, fairly central but in a quiet area. The room was comfortable and had a lovely modern en-suite. The breakfast is very good with lots of choice. A good value middle range hotel. We would stay there again.

Top Tip: Great Irish pub round the corner.

The hotel was a typical budget hotel - the reception was nice, but the rooms were not. The rooms were very old and had not been decorated for a while. Further, the hotel is quite a trek from the Train station but is close to Dam square.

When we arrived the hotel staff were very rude - they said the rooms were not ready and hustled us away until they were. When we came back a few hours later we received the same response a blunt "no". We explained that we were tired from thr flight and politely enquired when the room would be ready to which the lady behind the reception simply said "Yes, I know! Everyone is tired!"

Unbelievably rude staff. Furthermore, when it was "ready" we went to our room to find it in a utter state - beds unmade, beers cans everywhere, rubbish bags everyone. Appaling.

Maybe we just turned up on a bad day - however when I visit Amsterdam next I will be staying at anything but the Nova Hotel.

Top Tip: Very steep and long stair cases - bring light luggage and not small children as the stairs are very steep and a child could easily fall down unsupervised.
