Lovely views across the river to Spain are the highlight of this hotel. A decent swimming pool as well.
The rooms are basic but reasonably clean, service for the rooms is fine, but the views are beautiful.
Restaurant quality of food very variable at the start of our stay very good. But the quality (and choice) slipped badly by day 3 we were served a pea soup for starter (the only choice) which was foul! I noticed 2 other couples also returning it virtually untouched. That said the main course was quite good.
Overall I would recommend a stay here of between 1 and 4 days maximum, the local town is quite nice to walk around but there is not a lot else here to do apart from enjoying the peace and lovely view.
“ Top Tip: Alcoutim fort worth a visit, 2.5 Euros is reasonable value.

The hotel boasts 3 star not 4 star above the door. Its still in the 70's/80's, the bedrooms are along a narrow, dark corridor and the dining room had the same menu for the 8 days we were there. The rooms are centred around the pool which had some of the mosaic tiles missing where wasps, flies and beetles were a nuisance. School holidays enforced lack of public transport to the coast etc, (twice per week.) All that said, the countryside is breathtaking, with the wide river very close to the hotel, look across and you could see Spain, ride over for a euro. Boats were sailing and moored and completed the tranquil existance of Alcoutim.
The staff at the hotel couldnt have been better, from the Manager to the chamber maids, our room was spotless. Not much night life but we have returned with a tan and totally relaxed.
“
Top Tip:
A river beach has been been well constructed, alongside a little park. A 'cafe' 'hut' also with outside tables we found very plesant.
The castle was interesting well worth 2.0 euros.
We walked around the village took all of 5 mins, joke, it is very pretty.

“ Don't be fooled by the four stars - this is really just a simple country hotel in a small village. We have stayed before and like it, though it gives a better impression of itself when the weather is better than it was this year! Sadly a certain meanness seems to have crept in recently, possibly with a change of manager - last year a muesli-type cereal was provided at breakfast, but this had been cut out this time, and even the bread rolls seemed to be put out one or two at a time, and rationed to one per person. And as we didn't use the little hotel soaps in our bathroom the first night, they were removed the next day! Because we detected this attitude, we decided not to eat in the restaurant this year. It was also noticeable that the staff, though the same faces we recognised from the past, seemed less smiling and content in their work now. We love the peaceful situation by the river and will see how things develop next time we stay there.
“ Top Tip: The local river beach was flooded this year but hopefully will be back in action by the summer.
