Residencial Caravela Hotel

“ We have stayed at this hotel many times - which speaks for itself! The staff are particularly helpful, the rooms clean and comfortable - especially the ones we have been given, though I think some are less good than others. The location is very good: close to shops, restaurants and public transport.

“ Top Tip: The best restaurant for me, because I enjoy a good Indian meal, is the 'Himalya', which is near the Avenida metro station, just around the left hand corner behind the main road - left hand side travelling down from Marquis Pombal. A 30 min train journey to Sintra brings you to the 'Restaurant Bristol' which is excellant. Rato also has a good restaurant called '1800', but avoid the 12 noon to 2.30 slot - it gets very crowded!

“ It's an old, private hotel with about half the rooms very good; some other rooms have cramped bathrooms and/or no air-conditioning. Our room was very good, except it was too near a noisy lift. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The breakfast was of the usual continental variety, but with plenty available; everything was clean. We have stayed there twice before and would happily go again. The central location is near the metro with easy access to main railway stations. Transport makes our British efforts look ridiculous: very frequent, reliable and VERY cheap.

“ Top Tip: If you like Indian food, find the 'Himalayan Tandoori' restaurant not far from the Avenida metro station but hidden round the corner off the Av. Liberadade. A fine little restaurant called 1800 can be found in Rato on the corner of Rua Polytechnica - but avoid weekdays between 1 and 2 pm; it's deservedly very popular with office workers. Best of all, visit nearby Sintra and eat at the 'Bristol' restaurant - up the hill towards the castle. It's about a ten minute's walk from the railway station. If you're an OAP, take your passport - fares are half-price!

“ Really nice basic hotel in good position to get about Lisbon. Clean and comfortable - our room had nice balcony. Incredibly good value for money. Helpful staff especially at reception. Will definately use again. Nice open air rooftop for breakfast.
