“ Room was clean and reasonably equipped, only major problen were the showers.

It was impossible to takeashower without flooding the bathroom, no matter how careful you were. This meant a mop up evry morning resulting in sodden towels (these were changed every day). Staff were very helpful and all spoke very good English. The hotel itself is very well located right in the centre of Funchal, right in the middle of the shops with plenty of cafes and restaurants within walking distance. Rooms with the shower over the bath are not a problem. The problem shoewres are just a base with a plastic curtain and rail, quite fragile. the water seems to run down the back wall and out onto the floor.

“ Hotel is right in centre of Funchal and opposite cathedral so very handy for restaurants and shops and buses. They even turn the cathedral clock strike off until 8.00 am. Nice roof terrace and room on 5th floor, although terrace is small it gets the sun. Only drawback is supermarket delivery around 7.00/7.30 in morning for rooms at back of hotel.

“ Top Tip: Resturants nearby and in street to old town are good - avoid the group of restaurants in the old town square.

“ There were some mixed reviews about this hotel before I booked it, but the location seemed just what we were looking for this trip. We had a superior room which overlooked the square. The room was a good size and clean. The staff were helpful. The only problem we experienced was trying to get into the hotel the night the football was on - we were on the doorstep for nearly 10 minutes ringing the bell.
The disappointment was the breakfasts. The juices were cheap and nasty; there was a poor choice of hot food - watery scambled egg, limp, fatty bacon and mini cocktail sausages - all kept warm over a burner from 8.00am; a brand new toaster but no sign of any bread to put in it; the sliced ham and cheese were very ordinary; and a poor selection of rolls unless you were down early on. With such fabulous food elsewhere on the island, this was a real letdown. We skipped breakfast all together for the last two days.
We hope to go back to Madeira at some point, but I think it will be to another hotel as there are plenty of other options available.

“ Top Tip: The Alensio restaurant in the Old Quarter was great! The food was fantastic and the live FADO (traditional) music was on both nights we were there. We had fish soup, grilled limpets, garlic prawns, fillet mignon on skewers, mixed fish on skewers (both prepared on the charcoal BBQ) and very tasty pudim!! The atmosphere both inside and outside is very welcoming.
