I'm not sure whether it was because we were there out of season (end of February) but the whole hotel was really cold the whole time we were there. The restaurant was so cold that the hot breakfast and coffee had to be consumed immediately before they got cold. After the first day we stuck to the cold choices such as cereal and ham and cheese. We did enjoy being in an area that was out of the tourist zone and amongst the small villages although the drive up each evening was quite tedious with the amount of hairpin bends and narrow streets.

I think being here would have been a very nice experience at a hotter time of the year, it was always much cooler up in the hills than down by the coast so at this time of the year it was just a little too cold.

Top Tip: If you drive a little further up the hill there is a lovely spot with a beautiful panorama that shouldn't be missed.

The hotel is wonderful and in a brilliant location - being up a mountain at 800m!
The scenery is spectacular and the flora so beautiful. It gives another experience of the island to be in these villages. The public bus up and down to Funchal is a real ride. The bus drivers swing the vehicle about to keep on time.
The courtesy bus leaves at 10.30am and returns at 5.30 pm from Funchal which was too early for us. The hotel restaurant is expensive and limited. It is better to eat in Funchal in the evening but the last public bus leaves Funchal at 9.15pm.
For this reason I would not recommend the hotel for young people who want a night life or necessarily young families. For all others, go for it! You can sightsee and relax. The indoor swimming pool was very nice and towelling gowns were provided in the rooms.

Top Tip: The hotel grounds which have an amazing variety of flowers, shrubs and trees and the shed (to be discovered) with the sheep.

Hotel literature states that hotel is 5 mins from Funchal, this is totally untrue as hotel is at least 30 minutes drive and this is all very steep twisting road a nightmare to drive.
The hotel itself is not too bad but I do not think it is what you would expect from a five star hotel

Beautiful hotel with lovely staff. Hotel was far nicer than the majority of the 5 star hotels i have stayed at..... It is "out of the way, off the beaten track" but if it's a layed back, quiet restful holiday your after, you will not find any better!
Had a great time!!

Top Tip: As the hotel is quite far from the majority of restaurants, we asked around and found that some restaurants have a pick up and drop off service.... In Camara De Lobos, there are 2 fantastic sister restaurants, Villa do Peixe (superb fish!) and Villa Da Carne (meat galore!!) who off the pick up service..... highly recommended!!

Great room and friendly staff. The pool and jacuzzi are nice at the end of the day too!Better to go B&B even if you intend to eat evening meals as you're offered more choice on the menu if you do this, plus you're not tied to eating there every night. You should really have organised car hire to get to the hotel (+ getting out and about) or you would find yourself tied to the bus/shuttle service, but then having a car is the best way to see Madeira anyway. A great holiday all in all and the best hotel we've stayed at in 3 holidays on the island.
