Alto Lido Hotel

“ The hotel was in a great location near to lots of good restaurants & bars (not british, which I prefer). The hotel provided transport to Funchal twice in the morning & the same in the afternoon, public transport was outside the hotel & frequent. Our room was spacious & spotlessly clean , with a plasma tv with enough tv channels to keep you occupied if you wanted a quite day in.All the hotel was really clean & tidy. Breakfast had a vast selection of hot & cold buffet , I will say that the hot food could be hotter. The swimming pools were very good. The staff were very friendly & efficient. Entertainment was a bit lacking , but personally we like to got out and find a friendly local bar, which we did. Take a travel kettle , if like me you can't function without a cuppa.

“ Top Tip: Lovely friendly bar Ilha, the bar staff love to chat. China town & the Italian next door lovely food .Supermarket sells cheap take away food if you fancy sitting on your balcony , sipping local wine.

“ We booked this hotel and destination as a 60th birthday treat for my husband and it did not dissapoint ! we had the exact room described and requested-- side sea view and higher floor. we were allocated a room on the 13th floor opposite to our travelling companions. the room was extremely comfortable and furnished to a high standard, good size flat screen TV, really comfortable beds, spacious, well stocked bathroom with powerfull shower and lashings of hot waterand the fridge and air conditioning was most welcome in the 30% heat.T he balcony was very pleasant to sit out on and we were situated in a peaceful position, room was kept spotlessly clean by the very pleasant and cheerful cleaning lady, towels were changed most days and you could obtain yellow ones daily for use at the pool. Poolside was comfortable although the beds in the indoor pool were much more comfortable.We were on a bed and breakfast basis and the breakfast was very good, you certainly wouldn't leave hungry ! the dining room and terrace was very comfortable and MOST staff very pleasant, I have to say the chap at the pool bar/restaurant was brilliant ! we had a demonstration on loads of ways to shape a table napkin,he was very amusing. We would definitely reccomend this hotel which was well situated also.

“ Top Tip: I read about the Indian restaurant at the side of largest supermarket and am so glad I did, it was superb, we HAD to go twice ! also Paradise restaurant down at the sea front was fab, had a nice lunch there and a really nice evening meal. The Hole in One bar themed on golf was a very popular haunt by night with live music most evenings, about 10 minutes walk from hotel to the left. The cortesy bus from hotel in to Funchal was great but plenty to see and do immediately around hotel area.

“ Excellent hotel, very good as a base for hiking the island, many usefull buses stop next to the hotel. Breakfast is served from 5:30, so you can do the early start trips. Guest are mostly over 60 ant hotel entertainment reflects this, so if you a young person looking for fun, this is not your place ;)

“ Top Tip: Levada dos Piornais starts just 15 minutes walk from the hotel, great for a first day walk.

“ this hotel is one of the original first built on the island ..i would class this as a three star..a little dated ..breakfast was first class..entertainment similar to the sixties..rooms ok...whilst other 4 star hotels are very modern and facilites second to none..... we used these hotels facilites for our enjoyment....

“ Top Tip: casa italia...a very upmarket restuarant 5 star cuisine at economical prices
