“ My wife & I have just had one of the best hotel stays we can remember. The facilities & staff were faultless & the surroundings were out of this world.
“ Top Tip: The whole area is abuzz with restaurants & entertainment. One visit in particular was Porto Moniz what a bus ride.

“ Extremely pleasant staff. Beautiful, clean rooms. Great area away from city center, but easy to catch bus to be into city within 15 minutes. Beautiful gardens, heated and unheated pools, great breakfast buffet. Many good restaurants surrounding hotel if you don't eat at the hotel.
“ Top Tip: Get a 3 or 5 day city bus pass for unlimited transport into the city and back. Il Basilico restaurant around the corner is a gourmet Italian restaurant - make dinner reservations! Nearby area off the promonade with stairs to swim in the ocean.

The hotel was spot on particularly as it shared facilities with larger Porto Mare hotel next door. Indoor and large outdoor pools were much better than expected. Palm trees and botanical surrounding gardens beautiful. We swam every day outside. Pool temp 20C, air temp 24C. Would have booked for 2 weeks if we had known. Self catering just right with excellent supermarket near hotel and good selection of nearby restaurants.
Note One of the reasons we chose this hotel was the Lido next door with access to swimming in sea but note that following storm damage early in 2010 it has been closed and looks like it will remain so for most of 2012. The outdoor pool more than made up though.
Things to note: 1) they do not provide milk in room. 2) while swimming pools, jacuzzi, gym facilities are free they charge 5 eu per person for use of steam & sauna. 3)There was also some building refurbishement of the east wing going on while we were there but that did not detract from our good experience.
4) Last thing, we were originally booked in to a ground floor (level 1) room near reception but found the noise from lower ground restaurant evening (until 11pm) entertainment too loud and after complaning were relocated to the end of the west wing which was perfect.
We Plan to go back to same hotel for 2 weeks early summer 2012

Top Tip:
For a dip in the sea go across the road and to the Pestana Apartment hotel and take lift from level 5 down to bathing terrace level 1 (no charge) and access to deep water swimming which we did on last day Dec 17th.
For tours of madeira try Strawberry world West & East Island tours at top of hill.
If you take the west tour to Porto Moniz depending on sea conditions it is possible to swim in the outdoor salt water swimming pools- take your costumes in case!
Try the local buses including bus 48 (very cheap) from main road up to Monte. Dont miss the fantastic Monte Palace Tropical Gardens at the top when you are up there. Either take cable car down or any bus back into the centre of Funchal.

“ Our first visit January 2012 - the hotel was recommended and it completley fulfilled our expectations. The room was spacious with lovely side sea view from the balcony which was furnished with table and chairs; very clean and comfortable, tv, DVD palyer, mini fridge for our own drinks complete with a range of glasses, T & C making facility re-stocked each day.
