“ I have used this hotel many times. It is clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast is of a good standard. It is very central in Funchal.
“ Top Tip: The restaurant Solar da Ajuda is close to the hotel and the food is excellent and the staff are very friendly and efficient. I thoroughly recommend a visit or two.

Myself and my girfriend had a 4 day stay at this hotel and we found the pictures a false reflection of the Hotel. It is old & unfinished and you can tell straight away that it lacks looking after and we found cobwebs in the bedroom and even a cockroach in the lobby playing around.
It rained for one of the days that we were there and the water would come down through the structures and down into the lobby area.
The bedroom where we stayed had a balcony and during the night due to the wind for being so close to the sea the balcony door would creak all night and we ended up putting a blanket to minimise the noisy door as it became impossible to fall asleep, it was like being outside.
We had breakfast included however it was machine coffe, machine juice (nothing that we would expect from a continental portuguese breakfast)
Would not recommend to anyone,

This is a hotel which is in dire need of refurbshment, both to its structure - the dining room window frames were visibly rotten, there were broken floor tiles, peeling paint on the balcony louvre doors, and inside shower room doors. and to its soft furnishings, towels, etc. The towels were clean, but thin, and the bedcovers drab with seams split in places. My bath had visible, poorly repaired, damage to its surface, and more developing. The mirrors on the pillars in the bar were brown round the edges and looked shabby. The pool is cleaned daily, but even this does not do justice to the cleaner's hard work, as its surface is worn, and looks dirty, despite his best efforts. The staff are well aware of the condition of the hotel, but seemingly can do little about it.
That said, it is squeaky clean , and the staff are superb. In fact I wonder why they stay in an establishment whose environment does not do justice to their efficiency and hard work.
Its locality is first class, on three frequent bus routes. Sadly the nearby Lido has been closed for 2 years because of strorm damage and is not apparently likely to re-open soon.
It is near the sea, but Madeira doesn't have beaches, only rocks!

“ Top Tip: Great afternoon tea, complete with lovely scones, jam cream, three-tier cakestand just like Grandma's, and a decent pot of tea. The Pestrana Mare just down the road on the same side as the Gorgulho. German run,I think, but they managed to understand my school German, and do speak pretty good English.
