Lovely hotel in excellent location. The rooms were spacious with good air con, large balcony and TV with several satelite channels. Breakfast was first class, with a good selection every day, breads, ham, cheese, fresh fruit, cereals, hot breakfast as well, sausage bacon, egg and beans.
Superb views of Funchal from the restaurant (6th floor), and the roof top terrace on the floor above.
Ate in the restaurant a couple of evenings, and they did a set menu with wine and 3 courses for 15 euro.
Very nice bar by reception that is open until 11pm, prices were very good.
Reception staff very friendly and helpful, and our room was cleaned every day.
This hotel made our holiday so good. An excellent base for Madeira, which is a beautiful island.

Top Tip:
Several times we walked down towards the seafront, and near the cathedral there are several restaurants. We found that the food and service in Apollo was very good. Restaurants and cafe's on the seafront are very pricey.
We arranged 3 tours through the hotel with MB travel, and their service was very good. A very good way to see the other parts of the island. We were picked up/ dropped off at the hotel. I didn't find the open top bus tours that good for the price, as there is plenty of public transport on the island, and the island tours were much better.

Stayed with my partner in September 2011 for 7 days, on our first visit to Madeira. Hotel kept very clean, including room. Staff friendly, helpful and knowledgeable re Funchal. Breakfast is served in restaurant dining room, which has a beautiful panoramic view of Funchal. There is also a great terrace on the top floor. Breakfast was good with broad choices available. Free wifi in the hotel bar was good.
Great location near to old town, but not a good choice if you require hotel entertainment or have children to entertain, in which case you'd be better staying in the Lido area, approx 20 minutes away from this hotel.
We were very happy with the hotel, but our stay would have been much improved with a room safe, a fridge (you can hire one per day, but these are portable and therefore not very secure). Wifi (preferably free) would have been preferred in hotel rooms.
Overall, we loved Funchal, this is an excellent hotel and we intend to return again next year.
