Located on the sea front at the end of the coastal promenade walk, in Praia Formosa, on the outskirts of Funchal, the Pestana Bay Ocean Aparthotel offers guests complete tranquility. The Hotel provides a courtesy bus to Funchal between 9:30 and 18:00 and the local buses nearby can be reached via an elevator and a 5 minute walk. There are plenty of fantastic restaurants within easy walking distance.
The hotel is a 1 hour stunning walk along the promenade to the city centre, passing the pool bathing area and the shopping mall, until the main Lido.

We stayed at the Pestana Bay from 8th to 15th Feb 2012 and the staff there cannot be faulted. They are all very friendly and helpful and really seem to care. We went with our 2 young children aged 3 and 5 and for the first 5 days out of 7 they were in fact the only children in the hotel! This didn't bother them though as they got lots of attention from all of the staff and other guests. The majority of guests were over 65 so if you are looking for lots of other families at a hotel then this is probably not the right place although I guess there could be more children around during the summer holidays.
The hotel is quite a way from the main area of Funchal - around 20 minutes on the free courtesy bus that the hotel provides. In Funchal there are not that many activities for children either which is a shame as it is a beautiful and very clean town/city. Would definitely recommend for older people but maybe not so much for families with children.

“ The food was excellent. All of the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. It was my birthday and the receptionist was told this by my son-in-law. Later that day a bottle of bubbly was sent to our room.

“ The rooms were pleasant and a sea view. I was disappointed with the beach as it was all pebbles, you could not swim there. The pool was smaller than I thought and so was the gym. The pool was very cold, but it was early Feb, I thought it would be heated. I was all inclusive so food was important. The selection was not varied and we seemed to have the same food lunch and dinner. The staff were very friendly and tried to please. The red and white wine were not good and this was made worse by being served in plastic jugs.
“ Top Tip: There were a few restaurants nearby but I didn't eat there. The promenade is very good if you like walking.
