Courteous staff who humoured my attempts to speak Portugese and they were able to find me a taxi to the airport for just 25 Euros, a good rate from reports.
They don't take credit cards so pre-book or have cash handy if you buy extras.
“ Top Tip: Its very easy to get lost in the twisty streets nearby so make sure you orientate yourself when you go out.

Hotel rated as 4 star, but in reality it is a 3 star hotel. There was no air conditioning in rooms, the water coming from taps was brown and breakfast not very good. Swimming pool and terrace only open from 10am to 6pm, therefore of little use if one spends the day out sightseeing.
Drunk homeless men congregate a few yards from the hotel making it unpleasant/dangerous to return to the hotel at night.
The only redeeming aspect is the hotel closeness to the city centre and all its facilities.

“ The hotel was absolutely appalling. We checked out after one night! Breakfast was awful, the rooms were jaded,noisy and small and depressing and we would have been suicidal after a week. One young man on reception (antonio) was delightful and we felt sorry for him when we left. This is barely a 2 star never mind 4!!!!
“ Top Tip: Old town restaurants - set lunches were fab.

Near the sea, though there aren't any beaches in Funchal.
Lobby area clearly has been done up and looks quite modern.
Rooms are not 4* UK standard - more 2/3* and could do with modernisation. However, it was clean and well serviced.
“ Top Tip: The cable car ride is just along the coast and the restaurant just outside it is modern, with good service and excellent food.

We found this Hotel very dissapointing, should never have 4 star rating.
The rooms need up dating and the light coming into the rooms was very poor. needed light on in rooms all the time them they were only light saver bulbs very dull.
The bathroom constantly smelt of a unrinal. needed window open at all time's, the hotel was full, so no chance of a changing our room.
Reception staff and cleaners very frendly.
The breakfast could have done with some variety, same ever single day. not even a egg. Breakfast staff which only seemed to one woman was very misarable and quite rude at times.
The positin of the hotel was the only plus about it, as it was close to the town. Funchal seems to have a problem with homeless people and some times you felt very vunarable when walking back to the hotel in the late evening.
