Baia Do Sol Hotel

“ Clean hotel in a quiet location but fairly basic.

“ Top Tip: Fairly remote with few restaurants, bars within walking distance

“ A beautiful hotel, we loved it!

“ Top Tip: The beach cafe offered excellent food!

“ Staff very friendly. Rooms spacious and very clean. Food good, especially the fish. Good salad bar.

There is a small beach opposite the hotel (black sand) but fine for a swim. Goes down quite quickly so care has to be taken with very small children.

There is free internet use during the week just round the corner from the hotel and a wifi area just by the beach.

Our only disappointment was that since the hotel had very few people in, they did not put on any entertainment except one evening there were regional dancers.

“ Top Tip: For the levada walks, we would recommend going with a group and guide as if you go by yourself there is no guarantee that the walk you choose is safe and safety rails are up. You definitely need a head for heights, my husband had no problem but I did.
We had a hired car, so in the evenings went down the road to the Calheta Beach Hotel which had entertainment and we were able to dance.

“ The hotel name is not written on the outside of the building, causing alarm. I recognised it from internet photos of reception.
Rooms were spacious & very clean.
Beds were firm.
Food was very enjoyable. Cutlery was very clean.
Sea view from hotel room was a constant joy. One external shutter would not stay open reducing our view to half size.
There was no fridge in the room as expected (but not needed so no problem).
There was no free bus to Funchal as expected which was a bit disapointing but it is still early in the holiday season.

“ Top Tip: Ponta do Sol is a wonderful location for relaxation & calm. The old pier has good views along the coast.
The beach cafe across the road is great for a lunch snack, refreshing teapot to the British palate or mid afternoon liquer. The prices were very good. The BBQ food looked, tasted & smelled fantastic.
The rocky beach directly opposite the hotel was a joy to view at different stages throughout the day. The sound of the sea was always present. Sunsets were amazing.
The rock face next to the hotel is having major work done on it at the moment. This means drilling noise in the day! It's interesting to watch though!
