Vila Gale Santa Cruz is located in the wonderful Santa Cruz town, on the Southeast Coast of the amazing Madeira Island. The hotel has much to offer including 3 bars, 2 restaurants, spa Satsanga with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fitness room, Jacuzzi, Turkish baths (these are chargeable locally and rates include use of a towel) and a children's mini club. All bedrooms are fully equipped with modern amenities including, safe, satellite TV, DVD player, air-conditioning, telephone and private balcony.

We thought that the Vila Gale was worthy of its four star rating. Our room, the staff and the breakfasts (we were on a bed and breakfast basis) were all excellent.
Eating out in three of the nearby restaurants - the two near the church and the one on the opposite corner - was very cheap and the quality of the food served was very good and the friendly service much appreciated. The local bread and cake shop Pasti Pan also scored very highly for our afternoon tea cake and also provided us with a scrumptious sandwich for the flight home.
Like other reviewers we feel that the 11 euro charge for use of the indoor pool was ridiculous and that charging a cheaper rate for use of individual activities would be a better option (11 euros is a daily rate for using most of the amenities available) for example 3 euros for a swim, 3 euros for use of the gym etc. Our only other niggle was there was no decent walking from Santa Cruz village apart from along the seafront which wasn't enough for us.
The weather was mixed but always warm and we really enjoyed our time in Madeira.

“ The biggest drawback is the cost of a Taxi to Funchal which for its distance seemed very expensive on one occasion we paid 48 euro's one way for a seven seater.It seemed to me that the taxi meter could be altered with the flick of a switch

“ Very nice hotel. Very clean and staff very helpful. We asked to change the room we had been given for a room with a better view and this was provided with no issues. however no kettle to make tea or coffee in room. Also only hotel I've ever stayed in where you have to pay for use of the indoor swimming pool. 11 Euros per person per day is excessive in my opinion. Either make it free or heat the outdoor pool.
