It's easy to be sceptical about online hotel reviews, but this place absolutely lived up to its five star billing.
The decor is most definitely modern and it gives the hotel character. The room was quite small, but homely. The bathroom walls are glass which is unusual so you can watch your other half in the bath. There is a fabric screen so you cannot see in from the bed area. I don't know what the twin rooms are like - but on the basis of the bathroom we had this hotel is not really suitable for a lads weekend away or for families.
The hotel make much in their promotional pictures of the 10th floor rooftop swimming pool and bar. The pool is so small it could be mistaken for a bath and it can only have been fitted for the pictures. The bar was closed during our stay and the outdoor rooftop area locked after dark. This was a shame as it would have offered great views of the city at night.
A few killjoys have moaned about the location but really it is very central. Granted you probably wouldn't walk into the centre or to the beach but it is just a two minute walk from a metro station. In reality, you are little more than a mile away from the centre.
Also, there is a large shopping centre across the road with loads of cafes and fast food outlets, plus a Carrefour which is great for breakfast.
Finally, I should mention the hotel restaurant. Out of all the meals we ate in Barcelona this one was probably the best - and there are some great places to dine. The food was exceptional and the prices very reasonable. A glass of wine, starter, main and dessert was 24euros per person. However, the place was almost completely empty with one other couple in the corner and a businessman on his iPad. If you're staying here do make sure you eat here.
I could not recommend this hotel highly enough.
“ Top Tip: Don't pay a small fortune extra for breakfast - there are lots of cafes over the road.

The hotel was easy to get to by bus and metro. The staff were really helpful and allowed us to check in when we arrived although we were hours too early.
Although our room faced a building site this didn't bother us as we were out most of the day.
Only downside was there were no tea making facilities in the room and when we asked reception for some hot water and cups they transferred us to room service who when they delivered it said there was a charge of €5 which wouldn't have been charged had we gone down to the restaurant and got it ourselves.
“ Top Tip: Restaurant La Tagliatella. Carrer de Pere IV. About 10-15 minute walk but worth it.

“ Hotel was modern and attractive, the room was very nice. The room service was good and very polite. However the reception staff did not seem very helpful. The breakfast food was lovely and had a lot of selection
“ Top Tip: Metro station very close by. Shopping centre opposite was very good. Tram available straight to the port.
