Hotel itself is clean and the staff were all friendly and helpful. It's ideal for those wishing a quiet holiday/break.
It's based on the hills and takes about 15 mins walk to a fairly sandy beach/rockey area but can catch a bus that takes about 20 mins drive to a lovely stretch sandy beach. Bus tickest are free from reception for the hotel's customers. Taxi from where the shops are about 3 euros.

The area is not ideal for wheelchair users and those who may struggles on steep slopes or hills.

Wide selection of foods but nothing special as you would expect from a 4 star, nevertheless it's fresh and hot but those who have meal later in the evening meal tend to be not so hot.

Top Tip: Last free bus from Esmeralda hotel is 4pm. But its worth the walk for shops back to the hotel takes about 50 to an hour. No buses running during the siesta (afternoon).

Afician market runs Sundays and Wednesdays worth looking and for those who l ikes to haggle.

FIRST TIME IN THIS PLACE. IT WAS FORMERLY THE SUN RIVER CLUB, SO REALLY A SUPERIOR CLUB HOTEL WITH A REASONABLE RESTAURANT.
I THOUGHT IT WAS ON THE COAST, MY FAULT IT WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE HOTEL DRAGO ON THE HIGH HILL OVERLOOKING THE COAST...STILL THE DAILY WALK UP AND DOWN WAS NICE.
ONE SURPRISE WAS BEING ASKED TO PAY FOR LUNCHTIME AND EVENING MEAL DRINKS WHICH I THOUGHT WERE INCLUDED IN THE FULL BOARD PRICE I HAD PAID, BUT APPARENTLY WERE NOT AND THUS I HAD AN UNWELCOME EXTRA BILL AT THE END OF MY ELEVEN NIGHTS STAY.
THE HOTEL WAS ONLY JUST OVER A QUARTER FULL AND FINE FOR A THIRD OF A MONTHS STAY.
PLEASE NOTE UNDER EIGHTEENS ARE NOT ALLOWED AND PERHAPS THE OVER SIXTY FIVES WOULD PREFER A COASTAL BASED HOTEL.

Top Tip: THE HOTEL WAS FAIRLY QUIET WHEN I WENT. VERY LIMITED EVENING ENTERTAINMENT.

Excellent value for money. For the 15 minutes walk to the beach, it is well worth it (The more closer to the beach the more expensive the hotel). They even lay on free transport (to and fro) for those who do not wish to walk. I was welcomed with a glass of champagne at the reception and enjoyed the complimentary bottle of champagne that was waiting for me in my room. I upgraded to half board for only 10 Euros extra a day, after I had discovered what was on offer in the dining room (I was given a complimentary evening meal on my third night there). The equivalent of what I ate would of cost at least 30 Euros in a restaurant!! The food was of a high standard also. The hotel staff were very friendly and very helpful throughout.

Top Tip: Upgrade to halfboard.

Check-in date:

It was said that it was more for the mature person. Yes it is, because it is lovely and quiet, but no it is not, because it is up quite a steep hill and is quite a walk to the nearest small shop. It is also not very 'english' friendly. There was only two other people who were english, it is mostly german, norweigian, swedish, which is probably why they allowed nudity in the community spa area. A bit of a shock when you're not expecting to see naked old men and women running around whilst you're having a spa bath!!! Heaven knows what the two teenagers thought - it was enough to put us off using it again, which was a shame - all for the want of a bathing costume! There were no signs in english, no written information in english. It was a case of asking the receptionist and one of the dining room staff for information. Most of the staff were very pleasant. Hotel itself is lovely but position is not so couldn't really guide you to who it is best for. We enjoyed it as there weren't many people there and we didn't have to reserve sunbeds as we had a ground floor room at the side of the pool with our own sunbeds and patio. Really lovely. If you have no walking problems and want a quiet, peaceful hotel to sit around the pool and read your book then go for it. It's a tonic.

Top Tip: It's a good 20 min walk to the beach, but it's a lovely beach with windsurfers and further along there's another beach with kite flyers as well. There is a courtesy bus throughout the day. There is an african market on Wed and Sun on the way to the beach. It can be quite blowy at the beach sometimes though.
