Puerto Plata Apartments

“ This is our 4th visit to The Puerto Plata in 10 years we have been coming to Puerto Rico for 23 years. We love the Puerto Plata as you are on the right side of the hill to get the sun from early morning for the rest of the day. There are two sun areas, 1 with the pool which can get very busy with most of the families with children setting up camp there. The second area is much quieter.

Approx half of the apartments are privately owned the other are for holiday makers, a real mix of nationalities.

The rooms are basic studio apartments, balcony's range from small areas enough for table and three chairs and the washing line but no sunlight coming in to ones with their own garden area, it's pot luck what you get, even if you ask on the booking form they can't gaurentee.

The pool bar has some great staff and during peak season have two lots of happy hours and during the quiter times just the one from 16.00 till 17.00, and boy do they let you know, extra loud music and banging of the saucepans. The food there wasn't brilliant this time we both had a tuna salad and it tasted great but there was very little, more Cordon Blue than filling and expensive for what it was.

As with all hotels in Puerto Rico it is not really suitable for anyone who has difficulty in walking, there are a series of lifts to get your through the maze of apartments but you still have plenty of steps you have to use.

The restaurant there is very good on food, wine choice and service. A little bit pricer than in the centre. Bar Ellington on site is also good to visit with some bits of tasteful entertainment.

“ Top Tip: Puerto Rico Itself

We are a middle aged couple that when on holiday enjoy a bit of a walk, nice food and some evening entertainment. So these are our recommendations.

A must to eat is at the San Migual (not the small tapas bar in the square),it's in the main commercial centre about three quaters of the way down on the left hand side. On most occasions you may have to queue but not for very long and the Maitre De (sorry about the spelling) will offer you some Honey Rum while you wait, the choice is large, the selection tapas dish is very tasty. The steak is melt in your mouth, and the Lamb shoulder with vegtables is to die for.

The cheapest place to drink we have found is M & M's on the outside of the commercial centre upstairs near the back. (look for the Hyperdino sign). Stella and Becks and the local beer at 90c a pint and 1.50euro for a spirit with a free can of mixer.

For some great entertainment, you have to go to Tiffany's a welsh bar run by Ellis with Martin and Cheryl doing all the work behind the bar and the DJ 9 a real mix of music). You can find it on the second floor quite near the from (Just look for the Welsh dragon.

“ Good value, clean and well maintained but a lot of steps - not good for small children or the less agile. Nice pool, on-site food, choise of 3 and shop, but sadly no Roy in 'Ellingtons' (DJ in the club) - greatly missed! Been for many years - as good as ever! will go again.

“ Top Tip: Vista Grill - try the chateaubriand (for 2)

“ We really enjoyed our holiday at Puerto Plata apartments. I first stayed here 15 years ago, and enjoyed it just as much this time. Always plenty to do out and about in the evenings.

“ Just the right balance of places to eat, from the excellent, atmospheric, vista grill & Ellingtons, through the informality of the long play chill out bar, to the friendly, relaxing, terrace bar for lunch the staff and facilities were a treat. The accommodation was very satisfactory with small added touches like, free toilet paper and washing up liquid and a complete crockery set, adding to the total diversion from the hectic life back home. Combining this with excellent maid and reception service, all in all for the first time after many christmas/new year holidays the time passed without any hassle or pressure. Great Job.

“ Top Tip: Steak House Miramar in the Europa Centre Food, Staff & entertainment first class if you did decide to eat away from the Puerto Plata this place will take some beating.
